I have a cello that in a heartbreaking moving accident had the neck, with the button, broken off from the body of the cello. I was told that the repair (around $600) would not be worthwhile given the value of the cello (bought for around $1000). I am thinking about giving it away for free, (I just bought a new cello) but wanted to double check. Is it worthwhile to try to repair that serious damage on a student cello? I liked its sound but.... Does it have any value in this state?

As you were told, paying for the repair may not be worth the fixed instrument (i.e. you would have paid $1600 for a $1000 cello with a repaired neck).

That said, the parts may be worth something. I'd personally like a cello neck to use as a base for an electric cello. I'd be willing to pay shipping if you decide not to keep it.

Also, someone with woodworking skills may be able to fix it for much cheaper, but you may not want to trust it to someone who doesn't know instrument repair.

I don't follow this. If the cello is worth $1000 repaired and the repairing costs $600, then it seems to me you're $400 ahead if you have it repaired--or, looking at it the other way, you're $600 behind rather than $1000 behind. (Yes, you would have spent $1600 altogether, but you'll have a $1000 cello, whereas if you don't repair it you'll have spent $1000 for nothing at all.)

i would say that if you do repair it it might not sound the same. though if you sold it people are always looking for spare cello parts especcially to make electric cellos. though the cello you bought was a student cello and a fairly cheap one at that. i would try to save up mopney to buy a cello worth a little more maybe buy one that comes with a hard case. the hard cases are a lot more safe for your cello a lot of people prefer them. bit 600$ seems a little much. try looking for another repair shop that has more good reviews.maybe you can get it repaired for around 300$ instead. who knows.
