Hi, im new here and am thinking of taking up cello instead of violin. I`ve played violin for a little more than a year. I was wondering if anyone else made the switch to cello? Was it hard? I was thinking of taking cello over the summer and then playing in the beginner orchestra next year in high school.

Hi Kelly,

I`m just a beginner myself, but I believe that after only one year with the violin, it want make much difference. You will obviously have a head start over someone who has never picked up an instrument. On the other hand, you will have to learn to hold the bow differently...no big deal. The neck is wider so hitting the right string might be easier, but being larger strings, may need a little extra finger strength. I believe we should play the instrument that appeals to us. At your age, you are allowed to change your mind a few times... but I caution you on bouncing around too much. Find the instrument that you really want and than stick with it.
Good luck

Not to mention you have to put a lot more pressure on the strings of a cello with a bow than a violin. The cello has high to low A, D, G and C strings(134 fingering) and the vilin has E, A, D and G strings(123 fingering with the same exact notes). On cello music the top line of the 5 bars is the A string and below the middle bar on violin sheet music is the A string. But I think switching instruments is no big deal. Then again why switch instruments when you can just play both of them.

I would play both, but my violin is a rental Also, I`ve played the piano, so bass clef won`t be too hard...I can`t wait to play But, I still have to wait another school year :O

Thanks for the input <l:`D

I was going to rent to own a instrument, but I decided not to buy it and there went all that money. When you rent, you don`t get your money back. Why didn`t you just buy a cheap violin? There`s lots of then on ebay.

im a yung celloest and ive bin playing the 4 years, im only 10, and i play the Cello, Piano and the Drums,
I play the piano only in lessons, but i play the cello in a orcishtra and the drums in a jazz band, so i think its great to play the cello because too many people play the Violin,
most violin players just play the violin because they can`t afford a Cello.

I hate to be a nag, but yung(young) celloest(cellist) bin(been) orcishtra(orchestra).

Anyways, I have a cello and I`m not rich. I actually bought my 150year old cello on yahoo auctions for about $450. Except for the fact the I spent a hundred or two fixing it,

Thats why people rent to own, unless their rich. The only way I would ever rent to own another cello again is if the cello was very good. I once played a $10,000 cello, it sounded good so that one I would rent to own(If I had thne money,LOL).
