Well, for learning purposes, you should keep your thumb connected to the back of the neck. As you move up the finger board, it will be nescesary to remove it from the back of the neck, because the neck ends. You can do vibrato without thumb, but the thumb helps you keep your place. Don`t squeeze with the thumb, but leave it sitting there. As far as the rosin on the neck problem..... I can`t really help you. The best advice I can give to you is to get your own cello. Anyway, that`s your business. I could take some polish and wipe the neck clean. So, yeah, that`s the little bit of advice that I can give. Hope it helps.

The thumb should stay in contact with the back of the finger board unless you have moved into a higher position that will not allow the thumb contact.

Ok, well this may be posted kinda late but i hope it helps someone along the way. Well personally I believe that there are 2 ways to do it. My teacher tell me what i call the "old school" way. what u do is: u place your finger over the note u want to vibrate on. (which i would suggest practice with each finger and make your fingers stronger) but pinch not hard but just enough to keep your finger in the same place and move your hand and forearm in like a shakey motion. Like your shakeing a bottle. Speed up gradually with pratice. The "new school" way which is the way i do it. I just sort of move my wrist back and forth, rolling on the tip of my fingertip. when u reach higher notes u should be able to do the same. Hope this helps ya!!!
