I have a few questions about bass amps. I plan on playing bass in our high school jazz band in about 15 months and noticed that the current amp they have now is a little weakling that sounds really thin and can't fill an auditorium with adequate volume.

I wondered if they sell Bass Heads without an amp in them that just have the controls and from there you hook the amp and drivers to it. My thinking was I could get a 5000w (RMS) amp for $800, a 5000w RMS handling 18" for $700 (120+dB output in bass guitar range, maybe 130), and could slap them together to make my own bass amp. If you can do that, then it'd be great to have all that output available (especially <40hz in case you tune the bass down a notch or two). A 120+dB output high quality bass amp seems like a good deal to me for under $2000.

Another option is that I can get a good 1500w (RMS) amp for $300, and an 18 ($400) to handle the power. That would turn out SOLID 110+dB output for less than $1000 which I personally think is a good deal.

Cheaper yet...I could get a solid 1000w output amp for $250 and a good 18 to handle it for around $250 which would turn out around 110dB for maybe $500 which is still pretty good.

Thanks for the help on the subject of DIY bass amp...Tell me if I don't know what I'm getting myself into. I think I do though...since I'm pretty familiar with putting drivers in boxes and such with amps. If you don't respond...sorry it was too long.

Dude,go with a good preamp(line-6 bass Pod xt live) for excellent tone and variety.Make your power amp a Carvin and your 18 a SWR Big Ben.You wont be sorry (the SWR only needs 4oo watts )to blow your head off and shake the walls,I know I am blessed to have one.It is a very capable cab alone or bi-amped.If you use it full-range(by itself)You will be starring at the cab for a tweeter but it does not have one.Just read the reviews on the web about it.It has the tonal-range and clarity of some 4x10's (25Hz-3khz). Be Blessed Chaz.
