Hi everyone!

Just so you know I am PianoDreamer and I am a new member to the site! ^_^ I started this new topic because I am going to have my first "main" piano recital soon and I was wondering if you had any tips for me! Also, if you have any recital stories of your own, I'd love to hear them! See ya around!

First recitals are always nerve-wracking. I've only played in two recitals so far, and have been playing for almost a year. It's best to just try to relax, and not think about the audience (if there is an audience, my last recital was just a judge) watching you. If this helps, think about playing music for the people. They want to see someone who is passionate about making other people feel good. That's what really counts when performing.

well make a mistake.....a tiny one because when you do your mind stays more focused and you get more stress out of you.....but you don't have to it's just what i do. U will get VERY nervous so no worries because what I do is stick my fingers together then pretend all the blood is coming out (just go with me) because it helps my fingers not to clam up. And defintily hit all the keys hard especailly on ur left hand. The bass notes need to be heard and if you miss them it can make you mess up.......(ear training)......wow this is the longest thing i have ever written.....wow

I wish you all luck...... what piece are you playing???

recitals are alway "wierd" i have been in about 6 recitals and i still get nervous. 1)relax 2) if you make a mistake keep on playing the music, don't go back to the place you messed up 3) pretend you're playing for your teacher.

I totally agree with not turning back to your mistakes. At my last recital, with just a judge watching me, I made a mistake on a fast Bach piece but still kept it in time (sort of). The judge had positive comments for my not going back. Most people in an audience aren't usually aware of mistakes either.

Prepare well in advance. During your recital, concentrate on your music and nothing else; capture and express the theme of your piece with sensitivity; your audience will feel what you express. Love your music! All the best!

To answer your question music4god....Right now it's a toss up between a song called Isn't It Beautiful? and Stand By Me......It's really hard to choose! lol But, next week I am going to perform them both for my piano teacher and we are going to choose one then!

Thanks again, everyone!! I hope to "see" you all around!

hey! i have been playing flute for 5 years. but i recently started voice lessons. i was always a alto in my choir. by private teacher said i have a reALLY bright voice.and im a soprano! ^^ she said i have a "hidden" voice range i nevered explored before.
exciting.
anyways. i have my first recital coming up too! and a week after that. i have a competition thingy, performing infront of a judge. nerve wrecking. i never sang high in my life before. my teacher helped me find it..in only one lesson. wow. that is amazing.
but anyways. my problem is..i have no confidence in singing. i was always told not to sing..or involve music in my life.
so it's hard to sing high notes, even though i know i could get it. i've done it before..but wheneveri think about "bad"things..i get discourged..
and can't sing high.

help.

<Added>

by the way. i'm singing "evensong" it's about angels and stuff. and i really like it. ^^
butt..

after a while you sort of get used to the crowds but that first time is

the best advice i can give is don't go to fast or to slow. play the piece how you would if you were practicing.

Hello schoolgirl0125!!!^_^

I see what you mean about being nervous.........but don't let that fear of what other people think control your life! The only person you should work to please is God!! With the strength that only He can give you, you'll show the people who said you couldn't do it, that you can!^_^ Who knows.....you might be the world's next hit singer!

When you're performing and you start to think of other's opinions....just think of the faith your teacher and God have in you! You can do it!

Oh boy ...first recital...I remember.
I was playing pretty well on my Khulau (hee hee I was so cute back then. ^_^) until I suddenly forgot this random measure by accident (which never happened before in my practice) and I was like, "Oopsies" and turned back and looked at my teacher bright red. Then I went on with the piece but the problem was...the measure was the closing/wrap-up for Section A lol. It was a pretty picture with a missing puzzle piece in it, lol.

First recitals are nerve-wrecking. I was shaking and stuff at my first recital. But then I started to get used to performing. I've just performed at a recital last month in January...
This is my tip:
~Please. This is a common misconception (no offense to anybody here, really...Please understand.) that I absolutely loathe: "Pretend as if you're at practice~" If you continue with this mindset, then you might mess up carelessly and end up not covering it up very quickly. You must get into the concert mindset. I don't mean: "Oh gosh. There are 500 people out there and I must be perfect. Not a single mistake must be heard". This is the wrong mindset as well.
It is more like, "Oh. there are 500 people out there who wants to listen to the beautiful music I'm playing. I must express and play all my heart out to show how much I love this music so others will enjoy it as well. No worry, I'm a performer who should understand to enjoy performing as well, not a careless person nor a perfectionist".
~And also, do not think "oh what 's the next note? oh what's the next rhythm. Wait is it E or D?". Just focus and LISTEN to the music and no matter how much you may not like the music just at least TRY to ENJOY the music so the audience can enjoy it. Do you think playing blah just because you don't like the music will make a good impression on the audience? And if you mess up by accident pretend it is nothing. Nobody will notice because they do not actually know the piece. They'll think it might be just apart of the piece if you just continue on without any hesitations, still concentrating and enjoying the piece.
