DO you think pedaling is required when it is not marked.

I only pedal those bars which are marked. But most performers pedal all the way through.

I am writing about the first movement.

Pedal when there's a pedal sign and release when there's a pedal release sign. It would sound as good if you pedal all the way through the Moonlight Sonata.

I usaly hold the pedal till it starts getting blurry. Then I hold it again. It makes it sound much smoother!

The pedal is not the real issue here.Of course you should use it.But do not put the pedal to the metal."senza sordini(a)" it saya so be careful. To me the real issue here is how to bring those 2 abysses and a rose between them.

Well I've only learnt the first page or two of that song, and I used the pedal througout, and just release when I feel it shoulds be released! You could just do it where it says if you want to play it exactly like it is, or you could make it your own a bit and use the pedal whenever you feel it should go. :D

Pedal when it says to pedal...if you can't keep connect/flow without the pedal, perhaps more practise is in order?

well, the edition of the song i have has no pedal markings, no indication of WHEN to pedal or anything, so I've resorted to (as someone mentioned above) just pedaling when it feels right. i generally just pedal every measure, but sometimes I pedal every beat (such as when the bass notes change) or on just the last two beats (such as when the chord changes consecutively). it's just something that I had to feel.
