If you are trying to sight read, it helps a lot to know what key you are in!

It’s always good to know what key signature you are in when playing, or sight-reading a piece of music. You will definitely need to know the key if you are analyzing a piece of music. It will let you know if you should be playing a F# or F. Knowing what key you are in also acts as a compass. It provides you with a road map, showing you the direction a piece is heading to. For example, you will know the cadences or if it’s going to modulate to a different key.

Knowing the key will also help you determine if the piece is in a minor or major tonality. If it’s a sad piece, you would want to consider having the same emotions which will allows you to perform better.
