Ellow!
My name is aKari and I play percussion at my school. Because of my piano background, I already knew how to read music when I started playing. Now after four years of playing, the rest of the percussion section still can't read notes. They are constantly asking my to write in the notes or read the music out like for them. I want to help them learn how to read the notes (I have told them what I know, like the FACE in the spaces and Ernie Gave Bert Dead Fish for the lines)but no matter what I do, what I tell them dosen't help. Dose anyone have some advice?

Reading is definitely something that has to be practiced daily. Learning the notes on the staff is first most important thing. Teach them in weekly intervals. Start them off with quarter notation one week, the next 8th notation so forth and so on. Make sure everyone has metronome to practice. Sart simple and progress. One...

well... i have noticed as the band (we have all been in band for 4 years) sight reads more and more, then don't even attempt to read the notes, they just quickly grad a pencil and right them in. Hmmm... how do I help them get out of this habbit? They CAN read the music, but they just write in the note names and read those well they are playing.
Can you help>

I think that your band director or percussion instructor should have a class on how to read music and how to learn all of the instruments from concert season to football season instruments.

hmmm... maybe
Now I seem to be getting every mallet part during class... and the timpani part isn't played, and if it is, they ask me for the notes. I don't want to sound like I'm complaning, but I can't stand it!

Yeah, that doesnt seem fair. You really should just have a percussion instructor. Where do you live?

we don't have a percussion section teacher becuase the band i am in is the highest band, the "preforming" band. When we audditioned for the band, there were no percussionist already in it. We did not have to sight read music during the adution, and we had about 1.5 weeks to learn a simple mallet part, whitch is enough to simply memorize the music
