I just got the saxophone for xmas, and I also play flute and clarinet. I know almost all the notes on it already, but I am having trouble hitting a few notes like the C that is below the staff(along with C#&B). I can hit it sometimes, but 1/2 the time its really hard. And hitting the high E(the one that above the staff) and any notes above that is really hard. I can't even get th sound out withoutconsuming the entire mouthpeice in my mouth. i've been practicing long tones which got rid of the shakeyness of the note when I first got it, and scales helped this problem as well. Unfortunatly, it is not helping me hit some of these notes. I am getting pretty fustrated with them now =/ because I been trying for a bit to get them, and nothing(mostly the altissimo range).
Hi. What brand is your saxophone? And by the way if you are having trouble hitting low C# and B, if its not the keys that are the problem, try long tones, and try starting at a C# in the staff and go down chromatically until u hit the note then hold it. And altissimo, if u dont have a book for altissimo u will end up biting ur mouthpiece entirely too hard which will cause lower lip and mouthpiece damage. Email Cjbass on the site email and he can give u some good book titles for altissimo
when i try C# or B you just hear this like kinda like rumbleing out of the sax=/ it doesnt go up an octive since i learned to control my lips but it just like rumbles @_@ and sounds pretty bad.
When I started to play the alto, it was really hard for me to get the lower notes. I took the problem to my teacher and he simply told me to "open my throat and blow with warm air." This helped a lot. Just try blowing more air as well. As far as the higher notes go, make sure that you aren't pinching the reed too much. Pinching will make the sound weak or make the not inaudible. I suggest staying open.
If it is really hard to get the low notes on a sax, it means that the sax leaks. You need a good technician to deal with the leaks. Most brand new saxes, including top brands, leak. Yamahas are less likely to leak, as are the better Taiwanese saxes. Selmers are very likely to leak. Yanagisawa is UNlikely to leak.
