I personally do not like Meyers, but that is my opinion. What do you want to play with your mouthpiece Jazz or Classical, and what horn are you getting it for? On Alto I use a simple C* for classical and a Lakey 6* for Jazz, on Tenor I use a Rousseau for classical, and a Otto-link 7 with a #4 reed. Those are just what I prefer and you may like something different, you are just going to have to try out some different mouthpieces. Always try before you buy other wise like me you have a bunch of expensive mouthpieces collecting dust.
Im a big fan of the good ole C*. It has done me well in classical music playing and I have even had good luck with it in jazz playing as long as the group your playing with isnt filled with other saxs using wide open mouthpieces. In that case you will never be heard. Still its a very good mouth piece in my opinion.
The Meyer has been a long time favorite for many. I had a couple of Meyer pieces. I had a New York Meyer but actually put it in a drawer and hadn't played it in a long time. Until I started playing with a band with a lot of volume I had to find anoter mouthpiece that give me louder, zinger of a sound.
I found the Meyer was good for some settings but at the time not open enough for me so I started trying other mouthpieces.
Wow but that I could get that sweet altoiy sound with that Meyer. Cannonball played one just like it for a long time.
With the right reed, and ligature combination the Meyer is great in the right setting.
