what model yamaha are you using?
If it's a 23 you're not gonna find anything better for under $1000.

you can get cheap saxes that might look & sound great at first, but they will break easily.

Its better, ALOT better to go with a jupiter or a popular brand as they arent overly expensive and they are great!!!

I started out on the Yamaha YAS-23. It's great for beginners (in my opinion). What level (beginner, intermediate, pro, etc...) do you think you are?? This will help when narrowing down choices...

Get a Yamaha, unless you can get a cheaper brand that is highly recommended by a EXTREMELY reliable local teacher, who has been familiar with this brand for at least 6 years.

I totally disagree with Lera's advice. There are MANY brands from China that have close to zero value, because the first time they need servicing, which may very likely be immediately, the servicing could cost more than what the instrument is worth after the servicing! And many technicians may refuse to service them.

A recent model, second hand Yamaha is a far better bet than a brand new piece of junk from China.

Note that SOME saxes from China are reasonable value for money, but the quality is typically unpredictable from one instrument to the next. And beware... Many cheap brands with Western sounding names are also made in China.

<Added>

This applies to saxes just as much as piccolos:

whatever you do, don't get a Bundy II. They are naturally out of tune.

.... And apallingly made, and a real pain to work on.

You are pretty safe with a student Yamaha - second hand and not too old. Reserve some money to get it serviced.

I have a yamaha 23 and i'm renting it i would suggest doing the same if you plan on getting a new sax in a year or 2. Also it is a good sax, good tone and good keys. be careful with the g# key though mine broke and it wouldn't lift up but it wasn't that bad of a repair.

You could also consider a second, higher model of Yamaha, such as YAS-62, or if you are very lucky, a second hand Yanagisawa.

If you can find a second hand Yani go ahead and get it, or some websites have second hand selmer 52's if you are commited to the sax.
