Hello
My reed has a few chips in it but it still plays properly.
How wasted does a reed have to be, till i need to renew it. And which reed brands are the best in quality and price?
I Have sheet music to swap for other sheet music. I have :
Portsmouth (in two keys)
Pink Panther
The entertainer
Greensleeves
Drunkem Sailor
The surey with the fringe on top

a reed can be beaten pretty severly until it can't play. Unless you've got a big gap or long crack in it, it's fine.
also, I fing that Vandorren reeds work the best for a moderate price. Just ask someone at your nearest music store.

I too use Vandoren reeeds and for me they are the best quality. I would say out of a box of 10 probably only 1 or 2 would be on the poor side. Ive used Rico`s before and always found they didnt hold up too well. As for the usage, they can be pretty battered until you need to replace. It all depends on the amount of chips in the end. Before now Ive trimmed the edge to keep on playing when Ive run out on stage lol...

I normall will play if my reed has a small chip in it, but I generally put on new ones all of the time to get the best sound out of my instrument. I like to use rico reeds because they're cheap and they sound good

ha ha, funny story.
on my bari the day after a concert and we had sr band and i started playing then we stopped and someone put there tuba down and it smacked my mouthpeice and my reed broke in 1/2. it was only held togeather by my ligature. i played on it and it worked, until i took my ligature off... it was funny.
a reed can go quite far. it was a rico royal 3

ricos arent anything worth playing if you ask me. vandoren 2 1/2 or 3 are great for marching and concert, but i wouldnt reccomend them for jazz.
also you have to beat a reed pretty good before it snaps.
Hope i helped out!

i agree. The Vandoren Reeds are probably the best quality out there. :D
i can usually play with a few chips in my reed. It has to be really damaged for it not to work properly.

I use Vandoren Jazz and they're great!! I'm using Rico Royal, though, for my tenor (they were out of Vandorens at the music store), and it's ok, but I like Vandorens a lot more...

yea i use vadourens.. ricos on my tenor cuz i'm just learning and ill be playing it for marching band.. but if you soak your reeds, sand them down, and use siscors to cut off the little chips then you'll never have to replace reeds.. well almost never..
i'm pretty cheap so i buy like one box of reads for like 3 years..
rofl i haven't had to buy reeds since freshman year..
oo and if you do marching band, if you put your reed on the mouthpeice then march with the mouthpiece cap on (before the show) then take it off when the show starts.. then you can save lots of reeds. or in my experience
