I've seen both used (not at the same time, of course!!). The person in our jazz band uses a neckstrap, but in the community band I played in, the people use halters. It can go either way...

i use the strap it doesn't bother me a bit. I never used the halter it looks uncomfortable. I put a sheepskin on the strap though just so i don't get red marks. I say straps all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a neckstrap, but in marching that would be suicide, so.....i would say marching bari=harness, concert bari=strap.

well for marching, it depends the distance.
<Added>
the harness is hard to adjust too. the clip on the neckstrap had to be strong though.

well that is why i have a neck strap for marching and one for concert band the one for concert band is older than the one for marching band. That distance was just around town and i was a little tired but it was fine.

The bari is almost as tall as me(sadly) and probably weighs more than me, too. I don't march with baris, tried it, and suffered the consequences.

ohh not fun.
well when i march its for long peroids of time, so, for marching i sometimes use the halter. it depends.
my best friend makes me wear it cause she thinks i'll hurt myself (which i have done before...)
