Hey guys, I was just wondering wether you guys use metal or ebonite mouthpieces. Most sax players including all the altos, 2/3 bari's and half the tenors use ebonite mouhtpieces. The rest use metal ones. I started out on a Yamaha 4C but now I'm using a Otto Link RG Metal Tenor Sax Mouthpiece. I think the tone quality is better and it makes you louder. I just want to know you're opinions and thoughts

Metal mouthpieces are good for getting wild and cool sounds but ebonite allows a richer tone quality and more stability. When working with a band I enjoy an ebonite because it allows me to blend in with other insrtuments. But when doing a solo metal mouthpieces give saxophone that kind of tone that everyone enjoys.

It's not the material, that determines the sound. It's mostly the chamber and the baffle, (among other things). I have metal mouthpieces that sound dark for classical, and hard rubber pieces that are so loud and bright, I can peel the paint off the walls! IT'S NOT THE MATERIAL! Try looking into Larry Teal's The Art of Saxophone Playing, for more info.
