i thought that saxes were usually made from brass

I've seen a hard wood saxophone made from a dark wood with a walnut type grain. I like the idea of a wooden sax, but it would need to be very hard wood to give the warm tone. It would be a bit like the alto or bass clarinets which sound ultra funky
