So I play trombone. Have played for almost 4 years and am currently a 2nd chair Sophomore in the high school jazz band. We also have a jazz band that doesn't meet during the day as a class, instead it meets during the evenings once a week.

I believe they have only had 1 tenor sax sign up so far and they need 2 and I have wanted to play tenor for a while. I picked up a bit of trumpet very easily over the summer so I know I can handle the valves even though I've been playing slide for so long, just wondering if I could handle all the keys of...any keyed instrument for that matter. Just wondering if it would be at all possible to pick it up in time. I have tons of time I can devote to practicing and learning so that's not a problem.

Anyone else make a switch like this before? Successfully?

Oh forgot to add: I know how to play a reed mouthpiece. I started on clarinet but then switched trombone after realizing I was having no fun with clarinet.

So I know how to play a reed mouthpiece and I used to play a key instrument but it's been a while.

My first year of college I was asked to play in a Sax quartet.I had no woodwind experience at that time. I picked it up pretty quickly. You should be able to learn the fingerings. The sax has an octave key so you have less fingerings to learn than the other woodwinds. It will seem simpler.

You will still have to learn things about the sax, and and the embouchre but repitition is the best teacher. I would encourage you to go for it.

Tenor sax is an extremely easy instrument to play and the reeds are far more easy to blow than a clarinet. Each reed can make the instrument sound completely different so try a few different types. The keys are quite simple to operate.

P.S I've found that the harder size of reeds are very easy to blow on the tenor sax and are 100% louder and smoother sounding than the softer reeds.
