Hey guys,

Im a Electronic Music producer mainly using music software to compose music. I dont have any classical musical training but have basic knowledge on bars, scales, etc.

I know the scale sort of but not by memory. and I had a few piano lesson when I was younger. I was thinking about picking up both Piano and Saxophone I know NOTHING about the Sax other than I as a 23 year old and want to play mainly funk music and jazz that I will be implementing into techno music much like artist Big Gigantic (look him up he is very interesting sax player) That I should look for a tenor sax.

Could you guys suggest a good starter sax that is a little bit above beginner status as I know I will be sticking with it, but nothing way to expensive. Im thinking maybe 600-800 bucks is were I wanna start Is that a good price range.

Also do I have the right type of Sax in mind.

I Have found a few good beginner sites and videos on your tube to help me with basic instruction but do you guys have any secret gems for tips for beginners

Ill also be trolling about these forums for good info thanks guys

Thanks Guys rock on!

Before starting out and possibly getting into some bad habits which would be very hard to break, please get a teacher and take some lessons. You wouldn't have to stay with the teacher for years, though I plan to in my case as a beginner, but stay long enough for someone to be there to guide you in the correct direction. Just my 2 cents.

Hey I would recommend starting with an Alto Saxophone they are easier to learn than the larger tenor sax is. I play alto and it makes a more better sound than a tenor does. And I reccommend a Selmer. For your first notes try learning these in this order:
G
B
A
C
D
E
Those are easiest and then I would reccommend the low notes AFTER you master the notes above.
Hope this helped!

First of all you should get a teacher to be guiding you.

No, the tenor doesnt sound worse than the alto, do not listen to that novice. I have played clarinet for one year and alto for two and now I started playing tenor. If you are looking for a new york dark rich tone than play the tenor or a high pitched smooth bebop tone than play alto. I play both so I like them equally. I play on an Accent Alto and a Selmer Mark VI Professional Tenor Saxophone. Hope this helps.
