Sopranos are great to play. Though in a normal H.S. band they may not have music for it (correct me if i`m wrong, haven`t been in HS for 20+ years).

Bari is great to play too. It all depends upon what you want and are after. You may end up like alot of us: sop, alto, tenor & bari.

Mouthpiece size is also vastly different in size. I`m not sure what you are asking from your question?

You may want to ask your band director about that.

I don`t know of the sop is common in normal band settings because it is more of a specialty instrument. I would doubt it would be in orchestra setting (though I may be wrong).

I play in small bands (jazz, etc.) and anytime I use the sop i`m usually playing the melody either solo or soli. But I don`t use it all the time. I swap between the alto, tenor and clarinet.

I play soprano sax in my school`s band. There`s not a part for it. My band director usually gives me the Bb Clarinet part. The only problem with that is that the notes sometime go lower than that of the soprano sax`s range cause the Clarinet can go down to the low F (I think). Where the soprano sax only goes to the Bb

If you want to play soprano at a high school level, you need to be aggressive. My son fell in love with the soprano in 8th grade. During the 8th grade visit to the assigned district, he asked the band teacher about playing the soprano and was told that there was no music for the soprano.

He went to the other high school in the school district and asked the band teacher about playing the soprano. The band teacher told him that, if he was good enough, he would have music with soprano parts. He applied for permission to go to the other high school and he was permitted to transfer.

After the first semester, in the second semester of his freshman year the band played one piece with a soprano feature. Through the rest of his high school career he was in the wind ensemble, and every concert had at least one piece with a soprano feature that he played.

It is the band director and the skills of the band which can make or break the soprano player. The music is out there, but the music is high level (5-6) and is usually for wind ensemble rather than full band.

Now that he studies sax at the university level, there seems to be soprano parts and features in most of the pieces that are played by the wind ensemble.

It is a great instrument, but it can be touchy. Many sax players find it the most difficult to play. If you want to get away from Kenny Gee soprano, listen to recordings of Sidney Bechet and pieces by Duke Ellington`s band that have Johnny Hodges on soprano. It can be a great jazz instrument if you can convince the jazz group teacher to let you improvise from the tenor sax chart.

i wouldn`t say that there is absolute no place for saprano in concert band/brass bad even in orchestra. But as they had said, you need to be good to convince your conductor to find pieces that can include saprano in ur band bcoz many musical pieces come without the saprano. However, saprano is much harder to play compare to an alto sax, moreover a tenor saxaphone. I understand that you are used to playing high notes, but i dont c the point as a good musician only playing high notes rather than mastering ever single notes. Gud luck.

there are a few peices in highschool, and even in middle school, that feature a soprano sax. However, half are just parts in the middle of alto parts, and the other half is like full blown sop feature. I played my sop a few times in high and middle school, and i`d be playing alto, then just switch it out with the sop, the back. it was fun, though tuning it was a disaster
