simply put, it's the kind of voice you are forced to use when you sing notes that are quite over your register for the normal voice. If you are a male and in your later teens ore later and want to imitate an Alto, most probably you will be using falsetto.
Professional singers develop this technique to become male Altos, to a perfection that makes it difficult to know if you are listening to a male alto or a female voice.
