I sing for a so-cal rock band called Real Brew. We have played a few shows, 2 at The Jumping Turtle in San Marcos and 1 at Epicentre down in Mira Mesa. Everyone in my band plays really loud, too loud in my opinion, and I am usually drowned out by the rest of them. They have told me that you cant hear the lead singers as well at rock shows but I think thats bs. I havent seen too many show so i dont really if what they're saying has any truth behind it. So I'm just curious about the vocalsist you might have seen at any concerts you have been to. Were you able to hear them over the band? any feedback is greatly appreciated.

This is the standard battle in inexperienced rock bands (and some older rockers who never grow up!). Everyone wants to be the loudest. Honestly, I don't know if there is a cure for it. My only suggestion would be to take your band out to listen to other live rock bands. Skip the big name, expensive shows. Find the nearest city that has live music in bars on the weekends. Go, listen, party with your band, then later, talk about the band you listened to - if the vocals were really good and out front so people could hear them and sing along, point it out - if the vocals were drowned out by the music, point that out.

What's the use of a vocalist in a band that plays so loud that the vocals cannot be heard? Your band leader should understand that and crank down instruments volumes until a decent sound balance is achieved; if no way, better change to a band where they are not deaf already or where you can lead it...

though it's more amusing to attend live shows, it is also very interesting to listen to commercially produced CDs; CD companies have good sound engineers that know their job.

There's a lot to learn just listening to other peoples' work and experience and you will save a lot in show tickets...
