Thinking about composing...    08:49 on Thursday, July 05, 2007 Vote for this post Vote against this post 0 votes

Hi! I've been playing the clarinet for about 4 years now, and I think I want to do a little composing. So far, I've been using a program (noteworthy composer) to make songs for intstruments that are in the Bb pitch. I do have a few questions, though.

1) If on a composing program, I have the staff (which is on the clarinet sound) play a concert Bb according to the clarinet ( a clarinet's "c"), would it actually be concert Bb, or is all of the staves in concert pitch?
2) What is the "Bb" concert scale in concert pitch? I know it starts off with Bb...
3) What major instruments are in concert pitch and what major ones aren't?

If someone could answer even one of these question, I would be eternally grateful.

1) It will only be in Bb if you set it to Bb. If you don't, the staff will always be in c.

<Added>

3) Now it does not matter which instrument has concert or not concert pitch because modern classical instruments can now play a full scale of every note and also in very definite pitch.

<Added>

You may ask if you have any question about noteworthy composer. I've been using it a long time and really experienced now.

If you mean, which instruments are C instruments or non-transposing instruments, that would be the Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Trombone, Tuba, Baritone (BC), Piano and Mallet Percussion instruments, and Strings.

Those that aren't would be:

(Bb Instruments) Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Baritone T.C./Euphonium, Marching French Horn.

(F Instruments) French Horn, Mellophone, English Horn.

(Eb Instruments) Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Alto Clarinet, Eb Contra-bass Clarinet.

Some instruments also come in A, G, Eb, BBb, EEb.

And, of course, some instruments, like the trumpet, come not just in the standard Bb, but also in C, C Piccolo, D, Eb and G.

Hope this helps and isn't too much.
