Hey! I'm a flute player but I'm going to be marching mellophone next year. I realize this is a concert horn group but I figured some of y'all must have had to march at some point. My question is: can I buy a french horn mouthpiece with a large shank to fit the mellophone? Or would I have to use a regular mouth piece with an adaptor. Also I heard that the adaptors were really problematic and I might even be better off using a trumpet mouthpiece.
Last question: I learned the basics of concert horn in highschool, so does the mellophone use the trigger fingerings or the single horn fingerings???? Thanks much!!!

You can buy french horn to mellophone adaptors - they are listed on ebay sometimes.

I march with a Tenor Horn in brass bands (obviously no French Horns) and use my FH mouthpiece with a shank for the TH... as long as you have one that fits snuggly you should have no problems, but if you have one that's slighly loose you can have your mouthpiece falling out all the time. If you're really interested get a local music shop or instrument repairer to buy/make you one cause then you can be assured that it fits perfectly.

Yeah, sometimes the adaptors can be a little to loose and they will fall out. my Band director actually welded our adaptor pieces into the mellophone. i prefer using a french horn mouthpiece b/c that is what i play during concert season. there is the option of using a mellophone mouthpiece, which is like a trumpet/ french horn mouthpiece(i don't like it) and you won't need an adaptor.
