Is it all other brass things that haven't been given a name? Or is it a french Horn? Someone told me a saxaphone is a clarinet with a horn.

Many times a musical instrument is refered to as a "horn". Which in that sense generally means wind instrument (saxes, trombones, flutes, all winds).

The French Horn is a circular tubed instrument with a mellow tone and great range. The International Horn Society decided that the French Horn should be called Horn instead. So a Horn would refer to the French Horn.

So horn can either mean any wind instrument, or french horn. It's actually most confusing for us, because if a director says "Horns up" he can either be refering to the French Horns, a certain section that he wants to play, or the entire band.

Oy vey.

Thanks for that. French horns are very cool-they don't really sound brass, it sounds like a cross between a wind and a jamaican metal drum

"As horn becomes the excrescence at the head of the Boviden - a family of the Wiederkäuer - and at the head of the Nashorns designated. The pair of horns of the Wiederkäuer is called Gehörn. In the transferred sense also similar things at the body of other animals, for example some beetle, become than horn marks."

"With the Rhinozeros (Nashorn) the horn is a solid, excrescence come out from stuck together bristles. With the Boviden (lat. horn carriers, among other things cattle, Antilope, goat, sheep, giraffe) it is a hollow coat over a bone tap. The Boviden is called therefore also Hohlhörnige (Kavikoruier)."

"Antlers of the deer designated in the hunter language as Gehörn consist the horn of the a horn whale (Narwals) just as little of bone substance and do not belong therefore not here (S. antlers), which is rather a stosszahn."

"With the birds for example the Kasuar and many kinds of the Nashornvögel carry a horn on the head or the bill; also the spur with chicken birds etc. consists of horn substance. This does not form also the Schwielen (sole bundle), hooves, furthermore the sheds with the mammals (shed animals etc.), birds and reptiles (turtles, queues etc.), however with the fish, as well as the tongue pricks with the kinds of cat, the horn teeth of the Schnabeltieres, the nine-eye etc., the Barten of the whale, the plates on the tongue, in the palate and in the stomach of the birds and some mammals."

"As diseased features horn-like education are with horses, cats, wolves, to regard with geese, ducks and chickens. Here also the Künsteleien belongs with Kapaunen, which one the Sporen cut off by the feet by a wound at the head in-grafted, where they do not perhaps only in-grow then, but also to become still larger to be supposed, than they would have become at the feet. The phrase "to someone horns put on "has thereby to likewise do. By "the horns "one could recognize the kastrierten cock."

The curly horn is commonly refered to as "Horn in F," because it is a concert instrument. The F, if anyone ever asks me that doesn't understand concert pitch, stands for French. Horns are the best. They can sound very brassy if you want them to, but they can also sound very different.
