i actually like the sound of the mellophone more than the actual french horn.i just pick the horn up 2 day and i had a heck of a time trying to play it cause i havent picked it up due to marching with mellophone.i like being able to hit the really hi notes and it is so much easier to hold.
I currently only play mellophone, but I'm intending to play horn as soon as i can get my hands on one. i think horn sounds better, (like, not out of tune 100% of the time) but mellophone seems easier- not just my opinion, but the idea i get from my section of horn players, too.
I am currently on my second year of mellophone in high school. As a woodwind to brass convert, I love the mellophone. My sophomore year I tried F Horn for a semester, and I hated every second of it. The tone quality is just too different, as well as the embouchure and how the instrument is held. Plus on a mellophone, higher notes are easier to play, and it is possible to march with a mellphone.
^ooo, what'd you convert from?
i actually took up mellophone kinda as a gateway to horn- i was planning on asking to borrow a horn or trombone for the summer, and then my director was talking durring class about a prospective mello shortage and if any woodwinds wanted to switch to come talk to him, and i was like "hey that works" so i did :D
i still havent managed to get a real horn though. heh.
um hehehe if you have trouble with small mouthpeices, mellophone wold be best. it is easy for me to go from mellophone to french horn to clarinet, but some people cannot make an easy transition, it just depends on what your comfortable with. i can play on a trombone mouthpiece, on a trombone not mellophone lolz, but not tuba, its too big hehehe, just learn what your limitations are ^_^
I personally find mellophone "easier" to play, but I definitely love french horn more than mellophone, although sometimes it's easier to hit high notes on french horn for me thanks to the trigger. I don't like mellophone's sound at all. It drives me up the wall whenever the directors call mellophones "french horn"...It's a MELLOPHONE! They have their own name! Why is he defiling the good name of french horn.... T_T
