Double tonguing can be explained through this exercise:

First single tonguing:
say tah-tah over and over. Your tongue only hits one spot in the mouth, fast single tonguing works.

Using this method double tonguing can be explained as:
Tah-Ti/ tah-ti-tah. when saying this your tongue hits your teeth then the roof of your mouth, Interrupting the air twice. Allowing faster tonguing.

same with triple tonguing: tah-ti-teh/ tah-ti-teh-tah.

I hop that helps you understand better

The above answer is a correct answer.

I have another answer that will also work. I find I do better with changing the tongue position. Using "Tah- Kah". When I single tongue the tongue pulls away from where the teeth and gum line meet. When I double tongue I move the tip of my tongue back along the roof of my mouth about 3/4" inch for the "tah" portion and use the back of the tongue at the soft palette for the "kah" portion.

Double tongue : Tah-Kah Tah-Kah Tah-Kah
Triple tongue 1: Tah-Kah-tah tah-kah-tah tah-kah-tah
Triple tongue 2: tah-kah-tah Kah-tah-kah tah-kah-tah kah-tah-kah

I also have a "fake" triple tongue I use for very fast triplet patterns but I do not endorse using it.

There really is no correct method as long as all of the syllables are even. The commons ones are dugga and tucka. Triple would dugga duh or tucka tuh. I use a different method of doo goo, triple= doo goo doo. Notice how the sound of the syllable doesn't change unlike the uh from tucka or dugga. Doo goo is smoother than the other articulations which is why I use it. This is optional and doesn't really matter but is preferred among professional hornists. You will know when to use it. It comes naturally in playing situations and you will know when to use it.. You should only use it if you are playing above an tempo of approximately 88 on 16th notes/ 166 for eighth notes. Otherwise you should be single tonguing because you don't want to become to dependent on it. If you are playing a scale and you are trying to double tongue it, the end result wont be good.
