i would like to know if anybody has any ideas on how to march with a concert tuba. My school has sousaphones (brass and fiberglass) but i think tubas have a better sound. I know there are straps made for them and you can buy tubas with two different leadpipes one for marching so you can have the tuba on your shoulder and another lead pipe for concerts. The tuba I am using is a four valve yamaha and it has a few rings for a strap, but can the lead pipe be removed cause i think it is soldered one but there is a knob right before the pipe connects with the valves. The knob is brass, but is is rough all the way around like you can turn it. would a eupohnium or baritone strap work or perhaps a guitar/bass strap? Any ideas would help.

Um. I think I know what tuba you are talking about.. That leadpipe isn't made to be taken out for marching, you have to have a special type of tuba to make it marching. I wouldn't really use a strap that isn't made for a tuba. Because they are made to carry the weight and support it in a certain way. If you can't use a strap actually made for a tuba, when you march, don't let go of the tuba, cause it might fall..

It is a 4/4 tuba? A euphonium strap might work if it is big enough, but that tuba is pretty heavy, so it might not support it long.

there is a special pipe that attaches to the tuning slide/spit valve which allows you to put it on your shoulder.

Umm.. I honestly doubt it. I researched it (Really quickly) and came up with no results.
The problem with a lead pipe like the one you described would add a lot of extra tubing, and make the entire instrument flat, so much that it might be impossible to play in tune at all..
Marching instruments are specifically designed to have marching leadpipes that are the same length (more or less) as when the concert lead pipe is in, so that it doesn't affect the tuning of the tuba.
