It isn't JUST the marching band version of the tuba. The sousaphone can be used in other applications too, such as a jazz band, or concert band, depending on if the school can afford a concert tuba.

Sousaphine is cooler then the tuba, especially when you sit with the tuba player blasting RIGHT IN YOUR EAR. Sousaphone cant do that hehehehe

Sousaphones can't do that? What about the bell that that faces right into the ear of the person to your left?

I prefer DCI contras even though I've never picked one up.

I don't like contra's. I held one, and it hurts your shoulder a bit. Plus it is hard to hear what you are playing because the bell is directly in front of you... They look cool though.

I just like the contra because I see it as more of a physical challenge andits easier to do a right lateral than with a sousa.

A lot of colleges actually use Sousies over contras, think of the Script Ohio of Ohio State with there Sousaphone that dots the "i."

I have a very old and cruddy 3/4 convertible that I use at home, and after "experimenting" with it, I'd much rather play a contra than a Sousaphone. Plus, even the best Sousaphones have a tone far inferior to true tubas and contras. Come to think of it, are Sousies even allowed in DCI?

I don't think sousies are allowed in DCI, but don't quote me..

I don't think that ALL Contra's have better tones than sousaphones. I played an old King sousaphone for a while, and it had an amazing tone compared to many Concert tubas!!

I know for sure that sousies are not allowed in DCI. Only Contras, Baritone, Euphionium, Trumpet, Mellophone, Flugelhorn, and maybe Valve Trombone, but I'm not sure on that one.

Umm.. Yah i think Valved trombones are allowed, but not like the typical ones. They have "Marching Trombones" which are basically the same thing as A Marching Euphonium.

One of those can be found here:
