Hello all. I'm not sure if the tuba forum is the proper place to post things about euphoniums and baritones but it seemed a LOT closer to euph./bari. vs trumpet! I know I can google away but I was hoping that maybe one (or some!) of your folks in here would know of somewhere online that I could find sheet music with fingerings for the baritone/euphonium for treble clef. I think that's all I can think of for now. Thanks!

What level are you? Are you looking for free music or music you have to buy?

The Euphonium is actually a type of tuba (aka the Baritone Tuba) so this is the right forum !

Hi, thanks for writing! I'd consider myself a mix between beginning and intermediate as I haven't had a euphonium (maybe it's a baritone?!) for a while now and flute folks + trying to play trumpet just does not work! =) I have a fingering chart but need to work on it a bit as my range is limited chromatically from low C (T.C.) to D (T.C. -- just above middle C) however I know those notes off the top of my head. I'm adding a few links to photos of the euphonium/baritone (whatever it is!) as well as a sound clip I made yesterday. Please pardon the clanking as this horn still needs some minor tweaking. =) Thanks!

I'm not currently looking for criticism on my playing as I just received this instrument back from an ex-bf who'd had it for almost 2 years and haven't played a brass instrument during this time. I'm a flute player by nature however like to try new things (or at least improve my ability to play whatever's around). Also, I'm looking for links (if anyone has any) to free sheet music in treble clef for euphonium/baritone or possibly even trumpet music that's in the staff. I'm using an antique satin silver Conn euph./baritone with removable bell-front bell with three piston valves and an easy-playing Benge mouthpiece (can't think of the cup # offhand). Anyhow, I'm rambling. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I actually have that same Baritone. It is classified as a baritone, because of the forward bell and the Front action piston. Technically, the definition of a baritone is an instrument whose bore size isn't cylindrical (after the leadpipe, where the mouthpiece goes in, that pipe would stay the same size until right before the bell). As you can see with your baritone the leadpipe gets bigger throughout. But the crazy music people would still call it a baritone .

Oh, it is much harder finding Treble cleft baritone music. I'll look around for some later today. Maybe you could even find a nice solo book (which may cost about $10) but would be better than any free music you could find!

As far as your playing went! Good Job. Some horns make that clanking sound. It's comming when you push a certain valve down? Or all. Try turning the tops of the vlaves and make sure they are completely on, that is usually (not always) the cause of the problem.

One thing I noticed though when I was listening to the recording, I think your tone was a little reserved. Try opening your lips alittle more while playing. It will get you a less strained better tone

<Added>

***Turn the valves Clockwise***

I will also try to find a fingering chart...

Oh, well here is a nice fingering chart!

I'm not having much luck with the treble cleft free music. But as you said trumpet music would be ok. I am sure there is a bunch on this site: http://8notes.com/trumpet_sheet_music.asp

Also, there is a site http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/ that has a ton of free music... Some of it costs money, but not all...

Richard-- thanks for the links! Do you have a Conn as well or just a bell-front? I'm wondering if my time and partial effort(s) is worth putting into this euphonium/baritone as my interest in it comes and goes. I'm thinking that I may get rid of it *shrug*. All three of the pistons wobble back and forth. I unscrewed the little slot on the piston to try fitting it better (I can provide a picture of this to explain) but it would've been too tight of a fit but I think it would improve the mechanism (if that applies to brass?!). Anyhow, added you to my myspace list. Thanks for the help, I'll look into some stuff on my own and see how it goes...

I have a conn bell front. It looks to be the same model as yours, but it is laquered, and has been quite abused before coming to me. I don't get to use it too often, as I am mainly a tubist and have a valved trombone also. I think the Conn's are GREAT instruments, and you have a great horn in your possession.

I think you have a great tone, and should stick with playing! If you go periods where you don't feel like playing, that's ok. When I was younger, I moved where there was no string program (violinist mainly at the time) and I actually stopped playing for about a year. Some times you need that time away, I started up again, got quite a few good paying gigs, and I recently got a job teaching!

I definetally wouldn't get rid of the horn! It probably isn't worth more that $300 (if in great, perfect condition). You never know, you might pick it up later in life and be really interested in it! I don't think the $300 is worth selling a horn that will last you probably your entire life!

What my guess is that you aren't having as much fun playing it. Is that right? If so let me know, there are TONS of things that can make playing more enjoyable and interesting!

Hmm.. Have you oiled the valves recently? With the Conn, you may have short action valves (I cannot tell from your picture) which will take some time to get used to. Unless there are major air leaks (you would be able to tell if there were) I wouldn't worry about the valve problem.

Thanks for the friend request
