Laura McMillan - Linger Longer - Perhaps Piano - CD Review
Laura McMillan is a classically-trained pianist, longtime piano teacher and solo piano recording artist with two CDs to her credit, the latest one being Linger Longer. Solo piano music is a tricky field because how does a pianist go about sounding different than all the others? A piano is a piano and there are only so many notes to work with. Part of what makes a musician sound different is their performing style which is full of little nuances (a light touch, a heavy touch, or a mixture) and part is the music itself (how it is written and how it is arranged). McMillan uses all of these methods to make her music distinctive. It just does not sound quite like anyone else. One of her key tricks is speeding up and slowing down within one tune. This is fairly difficult if you are playing with a band, but it is relatively easy if you are performing by yourself. But it makes the listener wonder what is going to come next. Normally we get used to one tempo and sail with that throughout a piece. So when you switch up the tempo one or more times in four minutes, it keeps us off-balance just enough to keep our mind actively involved with the music. Whereas so many solo pianists play soft meditative new age music that is good for massages or breathing-chakra exercises or whatever, this music is a little more pro-active in engaging your mind. For example, the five-and-a-half-minute composition “Empty” is anything but. It starts with light notes and runs, then features heavy chording at the 2:00 and 2:50 marks. It starts slow and then picks up speed. It has a catchy riff. The melody at one point is either echoed with itself or with a similar counter-melody. And that is just one tune! I recommend this recording for the adventurous of spirit who want the general softness of solo piano music, but are looking for something just a tad more thought-provoking than average.
Thank you so very much for taking the time and making the effort to review my album 'Linger Longer'.
