Ciro Hurtado plays acoustic guitar with an unusual Latin style that combines what he calls Andean Blues (from his Peruvian birthplace) with Los Angeles Blues (where he lives now).
His latest recording is the appropriately-titled LOS ANGELES BLUES. This is mostly a solo guitar album (with faint percussion on two tracks). Hurtado weaves a special spell with his unique playing that reflects the rain-forest hinterlands of Peru one moment and European classical guitar with overtones of Bach the next.
This is an excellent CD. It is refreshing to hear an acoustic guitarist that does not sound like everyone else. He doesn’t even sound like other guitarists with Latin heritage. He is out there trying his own thing. He is writing music that drifts back and forth through various genres including world, new age and classical with occasional folk and jazz flourishes. Credit where credit is due. This musician is pushing into new territory. Give a listen (Google search him and find a site where you can listen to samples of his tunes).
