ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES:

Gerald Heyward (USA)
(The Original Gospel Drummer)
(Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Puff Daddy, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, Usher)
Born and raised in Brooklyn NY, Gerald grew up in one of the most popular churches in the city. The Institutional Church of God in Christ was infamous for their Sunday evening services and high-energy musicals. It was there that he was privileged to sit under the tutelage of some of the best musicians in Gospel Music. His roster reads with the best of Pop, R&B and Gospel including but not limited to Silk, Keith Sweat, Missy Elliot, Black Street, NKOTB, Coolio, Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, Mario, Kelly Price, 112, Amerie, Monica, Genuine, BeBe Winans, Lil Kim, R. Kelly, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson, Usher, Lil Wayne, T.I., Young Jeezy, T-Pain, Kelly Rowland, Destiny’s Child, Stevie Wonder, Chris Brown, Beyonce and Jay-Z.
In the studio, Gerald has had the privilege to collaborate with top industry producers to create some of the most memorable hits in the archives of music history including Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time”, “Privacy” and “You Rock my World”. Gerald’s camaraderie with his contemporaries has inevitably thrust him into the role of mentor. Many up-and-coming drummers solicit him for advice for everything from auditioning for gigs, going on tour, studio sessions to how to conduct themselves when interacting with the artist. Gerald has mentored the likes of Aaron Spears (Usher), Brandon Mullen (Robert Flack, Chris Cad) and De’Arcus Curry (T-Pain) and has inspired a generation of drummers who only dreamed of breaking beyond the church walls into the secular industry they admirably watched Gerald dominate. Over the past decades Gerald has regularly performed on a host of television shows such as, Good Morning America, Jay Leno, The Arsenio Hall Show, Rosie O’Donnell, Live with Regis and Kellie, the Today Show, Showtime at the Apollo, Saturday Night Live, Conan O’Brien, David Letterman, Oprah Winfrey, etc. With such high level of consistent visibility he has acquired endorsement relationships with the music industry’s upper echelon in musical equipment companies. Gerald is exclusively endorsed by DW Drums, Vic Firth Drumsticks, Remo Drum Heads, Roland Electronics and Zildjian Cymbals. Gerald has remained relevant and been tremendously successful for 20+ years in a very volatile and ever-changing music industry. He credits his success to his faith and commitment to God and his wife and family.

A native of Vienna, Austria, Thomas has performed at every major international drum festival and has toured the world many times over as a sideman as well as solo performer. Due to overwhelming demand, these videos were re-released on DVD in 2004 by Hudson Music.
In 2003 Thomas released the multi award-winning instructional DVD and book “Creative Control” which was an instant hit with drummers and drum teachers around the world. His highly anticipated follow-up DVD and book, "Creative Coordination & Advanced Foot Technique" was released in November of 2006. This ground-breaking DVD has also won worldwide awards. All of Thomas Lang’s DVD’s and books remain Best-sellers and are available through his offical merchandise site. In his quest to “play the unplayed” Thomas has worked with the research and development team at Meinl Cymbals to create “Tom’s Becken” – a pitch-matched range of contemporary crash cymbals that provide acoustic and electronic drummers with modern sounds that resemble artificially engineered cymbal samples. Launched in 2002, “Tom’s Becken” were so well received that in 2004 Thomas worked with Meinl once again to design the “Fast Hats”, and a whole series of “Filter Chinas”. In 2002, Remo approached Thomas to produce the “Thomas Lang Practice Kit”. Other Thomas Lang signature products are Vic Firth’s “Thomas Lang signature model” stick and the “Thomas Lang signature Bigfoot” bassdrum beaters. In 2009, Thomas launched The Thomas Lang Drumming Boot Camp a multi-day touring, educational drumming experience that he hosted in various locations around the world including London, Los Angeles, New York and Berlin among others. John Blackwell,jr. (USA)
(Drummer with Prince for 12 Years)
(Prince, Justin Timberlake, Cameo, Billy Eckstine, Patti LaBelle)
An American contemporary R&B, funk, jazz, fusion, and pop drummer, best known for his work with Prince, John grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and started playing drums at age 3, learning from his father John Blackwell Sr, a drummer himself, who played with artists such as Mary Wells, King Curtis, Joe Simon, J.J. Jackson, The Drifters etc. As a teenager, John played in Columbia SC at W.J. Keenan High School marching and jazz bands. At 17, he played his first high profile show with singer and swing bandleader Billy Eckstine. In 1992 John chose to further his drum studies by enrolling into Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He kept himself extremely busy and created a strong buzz about him while performing as much as possible with many Jazz and R&B artists around Boston. John graduated from Berklee in 1995 and landed the gig with legendary funk group Cameo who he played with for the next 3 years. In 1998 after his time with Cameo, John packed up and moved to Los Angeles, California. He was in LA for only 3 days when he landed the drum position for the legendary R&B Diva, Patti LaBelle. During this time John recorded for LaBelle's Grammy Award winning CD, DVD and VHS, "Patti LaBelle-Live One Night Only". John met Prince while performing with LaBelle in Minneapolis and joined his band The New Power Generation in 2000. John played with Prince for 12 years and appeared on his 2003 Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas DVD, and the 2003 instrumental album, N.E.W.S, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. From 1995 until present, John has played with many other pop, funk, hip-hop, jazz and fusion stars, including Justin Timberlake, Cameo, Utada Hikaru, Crystal Kay, P Diddy and Charlie Singleton. He played at the 2008 and 2011 Buddy Rich Memorial Concert. He released his debut album in December 2009, called The John Blackwell Project and has two educational Drum DVDs.
The first is a two-disc set entitled "John Blackwell-Technique, Grooving and Showmanship" the second is self-titled "John Blackwell" and is part of the Hudson Music Masters Series. He has endorsements from Tama Drums and Zildjian cymbals and sticks. John Blackwell Jr. - known as the sound, funk and fury behind Prince and the New Power Generation and Justin Timberlake - is truly a spectacle for the eyes and ears. His slamming tight grooves, popping snare and furiously flamboyant drumstick twirling and cross-arm strokes must be seen to be believed!

Justin Scott (UK)
(Head of Drums, THE INSTITUTE, London, England)
(Amit Chatterjee, Brett Garsed, Chris Ramsing, Phelan Kane)
After initially studying at Berklee College Music, Justin went on to attain a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from the London College of Music and Media. In addition,
he has studied privately with some of the most notable tutors in the world, including Gary Chaffee, Mike Mangini, John Marshall, Ed Kaspik, John Ramsey and Pete Zeldman. Throughout his career, he has played and recorded throughout Europe, USA and Asia. Whether it’s fusion with world class guitarists such as Amit Chatterjee (Joe Zawinul), Brett Garsed (John Farnham), or Mekaal Hasan (Billy Cobham); the metrically twisted compositions of Australian songwriter, Chris Ramsing; loops and breaks for producer and programmer Phelan Kane (Placebo, Dido); the lyricism of singer/songwriters such as Moira Lambert (St. Etienne); or double kick drums with cult rock band Howser, Justin’s respect for the music shines through in whatever idiom he’s required to perform. As well as maintaining a busy playing career, over the last ten years Justin has become increasingly involved in music education. His passion for teaching drums has led to work at a number of institutions such as Thames Valley University, Drumtech and ICMP (now known as THE INSTITUTE) where, in addition to teaching, he has been involved course development and curriculum design. Since October 2005, he has also written a monthly educational article for UK drumming magazine the Rhythm Magazine during which time has had over 60 articles published. His first drum tuition book, “Learn to Play Drums”, was published in 2008 by Quarto Publishing, has been translated into six languages and is available in ten countries worldwide. Throughout this time, Justin has maintained a successful private teaching practice from his studio in West London and has consequently taught literally hundreds of students including Elliot Fyffe (Blue, Ronan Keating), Aicha Djidjelli (Rachael Stevens, Amy Studt) Lawrence Colbert (Ride), Adam Ficek (Baby Shambles), Olly Betts (The Duke Spirit), and Stephen Simmonds (Groovejet).
