i just rented an alto sax the other day and ive played it a few times. But whenever i try to play a low G or lower it jumps an octave. Am I doing something wrong?

try loosening your lips a little as you go lower you`re putting too much pressure on the low notes and as you go higher blow fast air.

I had this problem too. Just take in more mouthpiece and open your throat.

you play clarinet? cause clarinet is held in the mouth at a 45 degree angle, and the sax 90 degrees. pretty sure, anyhow.

loosen your lips and put more mouthpiece in your mouth ... barely touch the reed and blow leaning forward pulling your sax back and then the G will come out ... if not then clean the neck and mouthpiece and then try again ...

Books are not often enough to teach you how to play an instrument, especially the saxophone. There are so many things that you can learn the wrong way, and this will affect you later in more advanced playing. I would suggest that you find a private teacher who knows what they are doing, and who can successfully mentor you through the first steps of learning the saxophone.
