Trumpet may be hard to play (or at least to tune) but at the same time, how many really good trumpet players are there compared to saxophone players?
During the time I`ve played I just met two really good saxophonists but a lot of great trumpetists.
Is that `cause sax is harder to really learn? Hm…

I don`t know about this. I`m in the same predicament. See, I started in 5th grade playing the tuba. I knew I wanted to be involved in a band enviroment and that it was something I could look forward to in the future at having some skill at. I am now a sophmore and band has really changed in highschool. Before it was like, work work work and no fun and now it`s really paid off to know what I`m doing and not look embarassing or anything like that. Now, I`m absolutely fascinated by music. I play tuba, guitar a bit of trombone, which I`m currently learning for Jazz band and a bit of piano which has helped me learn all the instruments, cuz I can play it on piano and replicate. Now I`m stuck in the same issue, I wanna learn an instrument I can improv. on (I just don`t get that with tuba ) and something that I can use in the future. Switching mouthpeices is gonna be hard with trumpet but it would be fun to play. Sax would rule too, but I can`t decide which will sound coolest.

I`ve heard and agree totally with "The Saxaphone is the easiest instrument to play badly"
Basicaly you can make noise on a Sax within 2 minutes of picking it up. You can switch the notes within 5-10, and if you have simple memory, play a song within that time as well. The Saxaphone however isnt so easily mastered. The subleties of tone, clarity of the notes, timing & technique take a very long time, and things like building your chops can only be done as its done, you can think your muscle responce better, you have to train/build it. I`ve played the saxaphone for only about 6 yrs now, and I know I have a long way to go. The destination isnt whats important though, it`s the journey that I injoy. :-)

The trumpet is much harder, it requires alot more lip skills. So, not everyone can do the trumpet well, depenps greatly on the shape and tightness of yr lips. With saxophone is alot simpler. But those with buck teeth don`t make a good saxophonist either.
Saxophone or Trumpet? 03:36 on Friday, October 31, 2003

Well, I just started to learn the trumpet three weeks ago, and I chose my instrument because of what I listened to - for me jazz trumpet has more bite and I personally like it more than saxophone. There are so many great trumpeters to follow too - Louis Armstrong, Lee Morgan, Roy Eldridge, Mile Davis etc... plus you don`t see so many girl trumpeters, so I thought I`d break that one!
but then you might prefer sax players - Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Coltrane et al
I think you should listen then decide!

My daughter and I are always playing around with different instruments. We had a sax for a few months and it was a lot of fun, easy to progress in the beginning so you felt like you were actually performing some music. There are many little skills to develop to become a good player, lessons or pointers from qualified individuals helps a lot as a beginner. We bought a trumpet a couple of months ago and it is another story. It is much more complicated to develop the necessary skills which allow you to create actual music or repeatable performance. We hope to be able to trade the trumpet in and acquire another saxophone soon. I recommend renting for a few months to see what you feel more comfortable with. You could possibly have a better feel for the trumpet. We started simple with harmonicas and recorders, which helped develop some transferable skills. Good luck.

I think the saxaphone is eaiser because once you learn the fingering you`ll have it down back. But when you start playing it might make a wierd sound. On a trumpet you only have three valves. The bad part about that is you have so many notes with the same fingering you might get mixed up. :0
