find a couple of good licks and learn it in heaps of keys is always good, and using modes, and pentatonic scale of the particular key is always interesting

if you notice on the sheet music there are some cord signs like B7 orEmi7. those tell you what notes to play. cords are like arpesios (b flat cord (B flat, D, F, B flat) the 7 after the cord means you put the seventh note (A) in but flat. so if your music says Bflat7 you would play some random combination of those notes Bflat,D,F,Bflat,Aflat. try to lern the notes to all major seven cords.you should also lern some diferent blues scales. ask your band director to help you with those i don't have time. P.S. don't listen to the other guy

Look i dont play trombone, i play saxophone and these techniques work, you can't just restrict yours self to arpegio but blues scale can be useful but shouldnt always be relyed upon

I find when you are learning to solo, it is best to keep it simple. There are more ways to make a solo interesting than just throwing tons of notes out. Make a tasty rhythm and be selective with your notes...comp with the melody if you feel like it. Soloing is all personal expression...make it yours.

lsiten to some big band solos some of the greats do very simple sometimes comical solos. so keep it in the style of the song but feel free to have fun with it dont think you have to play the most tecnical most difficult thing you can think of. and nother good way to learn is play along with some good jazz bands on CD mess around finding the key and then go off that it can be quite fun at times.
