I think that would be a blast! However, I don't know how many non-Americans can play jazz, even though a fair few most likely can.

just spread on the word and well figure out somethin. we could have them record their band(or selves) or video themselves and post link here or upload to youtube. the music recordings could be turned into mp3s it would make things convienient.

go about it by sperading the thoughht and well find bands to record
then we can have them post the aiudio files here if they can, mabey we could get a person to recieve all of the files and fix them up.
also we could advertize on other forums.
if you are interested stay posted mabe try to help get the word out or help me organize this or you could sign up your band.
should peole be able to do it solo?

I think it sounds like a great idea, and I'll bet my jazz band would like to do it. Maybe we should contact the 8notes admin and bounce some ideas of him.
<Added>
*oops* I meant "bounce some ideas OFF him." Also, I think it would be okay if piano players did solos, but probably not, for example, a sax with no piano or percussion accompaniment.

DanTheMaster mentioned: "... but probably not, for example, a sax with no piano or percussion accompaniment."

Here's an idea, although not strictly "jazz" in the way it's usually understood.
Firstly, someone could nominate a tempo, and possibly a key or chord progression. Then players (from anywhere, preferably everywhere!) could upload riffs/lines/solos/sounds-of-any-description/midifiles for others to remix and manipulate – possibly over loops/scratches/live or just with other sounds and effects. So it's more of your jazzy-hiphop, jazzy-trance, jazzy-soundscape ... or something entirely unexpected.
Then, if there's a video artist around here somewhere, you might eventually put the whole thing on YouTube. (Copyright and royalties minefield, especially if it becomes a hit. Participants might agree in advance to share in equal proportions, say, just to get the ball rolling.)
Anyhow, just a brainwave. Further suggestions? Should this become a new thread?

i think you could play solo with a midi or other type of backing track rythm section.
any more ideas or possible suggestions?
pass on the word.

How about: standard rhythm section (only) backing track; various soloists record solos over pre-determined parts of the backing, recording "wild" (ie, not worrying about timecode, sync, etc). While recording, have the backing track playing through cans so none of it spills onto the solo track.
Send all the bits and pieces to someone with the knowhow and gear to assemble the whole thing.
You'd send in a part with directions such as: here's a wav file of the sax solo – third chorus of XxxxYyyyZzzz ... the note "F#" (say) in the opening phrase should fall of the first beat of the second bar of the chorus.
