It's obvious that I'm obsessed, but that about you? Never heard of it, don't think oboes were meant for it, love it? I want to know how many other people agree/disagree with me!
A jazz oboe? I am not sure. It sounds very interesting and I am sure it could work in the right ensemble. I would say you could go for it, good luck finding music. If you make it work I would love to hear it.
Oh, no one can just PLAY it. It takes years to learn to play properly. The pros sound really good. I mean, unless the people in your band have been profesionally trained and still stink, I wouldn't put all of your judgement into those few people.
Very nice.
Not too shabby. I didn't think I would like it because I you can't do the bends like with Trombone, sax, etc. But Jean Luc is pretty good besides that. Nice sound and he seems to know his scales.
Regarding an earlier comment on puffing cheeks. Who told you that?
If your embouchre is correct you should be able to puff your cheeks, AND if you don't puff your cheeks how the heck are you ever going to circular breathe?!
The guy in the video pulls it off very well! I've definitely never been able to. I think oboe could become a standard jazz instrument, and as a composer, I would be willing to add to the repertoire if a good oboist wanted a piece to play. I think jazz english horn is a much better idea! Does anyone know of any jazz english horn in existence?
Here's Jean-Luc Fillon playing some Ellington on English horn. Here's his YouTube page with various interesting links, and his website. Pretty cool stuff!
ps – if that's not crazy enough, follow the links to Michel Godard playing jazz/crossover/whatever serpent.

What do you mean? I have seen only amateurs puff their cheeks. I don't, and I breathe just fine on my tenor and bassoon. I was told not to, and that breathing should go right from your lungs into the instrument in a straight stream, so puffy cheeks do not result. I my experience of life, I have yet to see someone in a professional orchestra puff their cheeks (exception with horns, assuming they have to blow hard to play (?)). Were you talking about certain instruments needing to puff their cheeks, becuase on the instruments I have played, I am pretty sure that you are not supposed to puff your cheeks.
