I have been trying to learn a how to reharmonise songs. I would particularly like to reharmonise the famous gospel No Amazing Grace in the key of F. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions while doing this.
I have got this type of thing going at the moment
C+ Dm7/f Gm7 Am7 Db7/Ab Bb/C F
A - ma - zing Grace, how sweet the sound
Em7 Dm7 G7/B Bb/C
That saved a wretch like me
This is ok, sounds more like black gospel than Jazz but I would be grateful if some experts on chord substitution could give me some tips.
There's a fair bit of info on YouTube if you search for "chord substitutions" – here's one that looks pretty good.
Basically, the whole substitution thing depends on particulars like:
• who's the artist (or artists)?
• who's the audience? (May or may not be an important consideration.)
• how "inside" or "outside" do you want to get?
• is the melody in every chorus going to be sticking closely to the original? Does it ever follow the traditional line? Never?
So ... to me it's one of those "how long is a piece of string?" situations.
