I started learning the trumpet a few weeks ago and am really enjoying it (although at points I sound like the QE2!!) Can any fellow trumpeters share their tips and experiences at beginning the instrument?

So far, I have been holding long notes for as long as I can (about 30 seconds - think that`s ok for now) and can play about 6 major scales, altho not quite fluidly yet and I can play the tune of Summmertime, altho I struggle going from middle c down to the g a 4th below....

Any simple tunes that are easy for beginners that I could try? My lower range is better than my higher at the mo...

It sounds like you are doing some serious practice which is good. I also think you should play without music and F&^% around with stuff and diffrent sounds that can be made. Enjou!!

p.s can you recomend anyware good online to find some music and stuff for me to relearn some basics.

Learning trumpet is hard and you always have to practise, for years and then it`s still not enough, but do it! It`s great to play trumpet! I`m crazy about it.

When you just started learining trumpet, make sure that the posture of your mouth is correct. Therefor you have to see a teacher. Keep practising, long notes are ok i think. It`s normal that you can`t play high notes fluent. You have to practice on it. Practice on big intervals. There are exercices for.

Good luck!

Hey Pyro,

I play the trumpet in High School, and I have braces. I am also 3rd Chair in the High School band. I would recommend not playing high notes, because it will make cuts in your lips, but after time, you won`t care. Ask your othodontist for some lip protecters, and tell them you play trumpet, they might be able to help.

Good Luck

Hi, I have been playing for a few months now. I had an unusual problem, my front teeth are chipped(i had a fall as a kid) and the sharp edges would cut my lips when I played high notes. To avoid this I used to play with a slightly different embouchure, this affected the tonal quality.
now I have got the edges blunted by my dentist, I can play more comfortably and am able to produce a much better tone as well. So if u can speak to your dentist, do that as soon as possible and get braces guard(?) because if one gets used to a wrong embouchure while just learning how to play, it get really hard to break the habit. Also eventually, we will want to play Still higher notes, which will become all but imposssible if nothing is done now. So just coping might do for now, in a school band, but it u want to play through your life, correct it now.
Good luck and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!! nothing else will make a good player out of you.
