my personal favorites are townshend and dylan.
by townshend, i think his greatest accomplishments lyrically are pure and easy, behind blue eyes, my generation, and substitute. by dylan, like a rolling stone, the times they are a-changin, positively 4th street and tangled up in blue.

I'd say that one of the best lyric writers that many people don't consider is Johnny Cash. "Sunday Morning Comin Down" "A Boy Named Sue" and "Folsom Prison Blues" are all well written. But if we are talking about the best of the best then there are only 2 words left to say...... Bob Dylan
