OK, to help with drama, don't diss. It's good to have your opinion but it could hurt someone's feelings so let's be nice! (Wow, I sound like Barney) j/k
My opinion is that Fall Out Boy, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and My Chemical Romance are great!!!

Me too. I understand that some people dislike there music, and that's fine. But I can't stand when people say that they're awful because "they're mainstream". That's basically just saying that because they've scored a huge fan base, they're no longer talented.

I don't understand how those bands fall under the category of alternative if they are mainstream and aren't actually the alternative to anything. The best alternative band is The Replacements or The Pixies.

I don't think that "Alternative" is taken literally anymore, to be honest. It's kind of like "Rock". In some people's eyes, Hilary Duff is a rock star, which is about as crazy (but funny) as it gets.

WOW!!!! Hilary Duff is considered rock...wow... Well I think alternative is more of pop-rock but more on the rock side. It is like I guess sorta like lots of vocal range and a little less heavy than hard rock but heavier than rock...wow I'm confusing myself...
<Added>
Alternative rock (also called alternative music or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music that emerged in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. The name "alternative" was coined in the 1980s to describe punk rock-inspired bands on independent record labels that didn't fit into the mainstream genres of the time.[2] As a specific genre of music, alternative rock consists of various subgenres that have emerged from the indie music scene since the 1980s, such as grunge, indie rock, Britpop, gothic rock, and indie pop. These genres are unified by their collective debt to the style and/or ethos of punk, which laid the groundwork for alternative music in the 1970s.[3]
Though the genre is considered to be rock, some of its subgenres are influenced by folk music, reggae, electronic music and jazz among other genres. At times alternative rock has been used as a catch-all phrase for rock music from underground artists in the 1980s, all music descended from punk rock (including punk itself, New Wave, and post-punk), and, ironically, for rock music in general in the 1990s and 2000s.
There. Straight off of wikipedia.

Well whatever when I think of alternative, I think of independent 80s bands like The Replacements, The Pixies and Husker Du, not throwaway guitar pop like Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance
