Music/genre is just as subjective as emotion itself. People like music because they just like it. They enjoy the music because it appeals to them in some fashion or another. Music makes us all feel differently, and it's this feeling that helps us decide whether or not we like the music we hear. And still, there has yet to be a single person to actually say WHY they hate certain music since the first post.

The point about metaphors is valid; however, on the other end, metaphors are very strong literary tactics that give songs depth and character. The only times they are ineffective is when a shallow person hears them or if they are mixed, false, or disconnected. Unfortunately, many people don't know how to use metaphors properly today, so many songs containing them are quite lackluster, causing onlookers to accuse all metaphors of being insufficient subject matter for lyrics.

Many will find what they will to love about music, and to say why the music sucks without any support is an immature and ignorant action.

<Added>

Personally, I find my interest in music spanning many genres, styles, and time frames. Anywhere from jazz to rock to reggae to even ragtime; if the music is done the way I like it then I'll like it. Most of all though I enjoy classical music, but in regards to rock I enjoy bands of both the classic and modern type.

Went to a gig to see Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple not long ago. It rocked. I really think old school rock beats anything new. I do buy new albums from new bands but I just do get the same feel from them that I get from classic rock albums.

yeah I like the old school stuff better... all the passion and creativity seems to be gone now(plz point me in the direction of a truly passionate and creative new band/musician if you can!)it's seems all the same and it gets really boring. most of it, anyway. maybe I'm a bit of a modern rock snob...

I can't think of any songs/musicians TODAY that will be called "classics" by future generations though. That's why I like oldschool stuff. What we call classic today. The music that came before. It's timeless music. Today's stuff is "modern" and it's OK now but will people think much of it in say ten years...?

what i mean modern dosn't mean all of todays music... it means like the music that just was invented like emo and goth !***!...three days grace and all that stuff is considered modern but it isn't this new generation of music

mmm ok yeah generally i don't really warm to much modern music (i do try though...) but if i'm being more specific i REALLY can't stand emo bands. bands like Panic! at the Disco and AFI get me really annoyed. their voices all sound the same! i can't even believe i managed to distinguish Panic at the Disco from AFI!!!
my opinion, anyways. lots of people will disagree, probably.
(i don't really know that much about AFI, whether to call them emo or not, but I heard saw one of their videos and i thought they might be emo. i didn't really care to find out!)

Well i like a mixture of both and other genres too. i think that old school rock is better but also if it wasnt for those older bands then most of the bands today wouldnt exist due to them not having the influence of them...and stuff if you know what i mean by it.

Guns-n-Roses
Nirvana
Twisted Sister
Within Temptations(symphonic metal)
Nightwish(s.m)
Metallica
pink floyd
Marilyn Manson
Warrant
Judas Priest
Aerosmith
Led Zeppelin
AC/DC
The Almost
My Chemical Romance
Chevelle
(the list goes on and on...)

dayyyuuummmm.
How many times does it have to be pointed out that System isnt numetal. [its actually the band's most hated label.] I prefer music that cant be labeled into something. Where its all different and scattered, ones that base their songs off what they want to hear, not what the audience wants to hear. Hell, Im in a band of my own and if I feel like yodeling for forty minutes...I'll yodel for forty minutes! System can write a song about the Armenian Genocide one day and polotics the next. Korn can do the same, so can Sabbath and Zeplin.
There are plenty of good stuff out there, just look, you'll find it...
'Suite-Pee' by System of a Down, thats a good older song.

[sorry about my speech]

oldschool all the way! i must have said this, like, three or four times on this thread at least, but that's how it is. some modern stuff is ok, but it ain't as good as the oldschool tunes, the classics!! don't ask me to support that argument with examples because i'm sure i've done that somewhere else on this thread. ah, rock n roll is awesome.
