My Favourite Rock Songs    15:15 on Thursday, May 25, 2006

Before you read this, note the title. MY favourite rock songs, not YOURS. I'm only 15, so I dont know everything. I'm English too.

Bohemian Rhasody - Queen I have to start off with this, because no matter what you say, it is the number 1 rock song. so original, and never boring. Its a classic.

Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd This is a true great rock song. You can read the lyrics how you want, an ode to Duane Allman, a man leaving his woman etc. but everyones experienced a "Freebird" moment in their life. And then theres the solo...

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To HeavenIt's been mentioned so many times on this list, but its a brilliant song. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham are all geniuses in their own rights, but put together, they can make a true masterpiece of rock music.

Gioia E Rivoluzione - AreaThey're an Italian Communist Progressive Jazz Rock Band, but don't let the genre fool you. I must admit, the majority of their work requires an acquired taste, but Gioia.. is so simple, and brilliantly catchy. You don't need to understand the lyrics. Plus, Demetrio Stratos is one of the best vocalists ever.

Baba O'RileyTheres so much Who I could have choson (My generation, The Seeker, Behind Blue Eyes, Who Are You? You Better You Bet etc.) but this is a stand-out, even if it's just few those first few seconds, with that thunderous riff, and when the drums kick in. I was 3 decades too late for woodstock, but this song gives me a good idea of what i missed.

Aqualung - Jethro Tull A killer riff, and a great story too. Every place has an 'Aqualung' hanging around somewhere. Then when the "Do you still remember december's foggy breeze", you cant resist nodding you're head or tapping your feet.

Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton People are always telling me how this song is depressing, but thats the whole point of it. Do you expext a jolly upbeat jig about his dead son? Anyhoo. This is, in my opinion, on of the most emotional songs ever, and makes me cry whenever I hear it.

I Want You - Bob Dylan Another artist where any of his songs could be up here, but I've choson "I Want You". It's Dylan at his best.

Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners Maybe not the coolest of songs, but if you forget about your street cred, youll love it. Its a wonderful blend of traditional country/folk instruments and more modern rock music, and a great voice too. The song builds up and down and up and down. And you will "Hum this tune forever"

No Woman, No Cry - Bob Dylan I know its not technically rock music, but it still rocks. Its a brilliant song, and every guy can relate to it.

Thickfreakness - The Black Keys This is my only modern sdong on the list. It has one of the best riffs of the last 15 years or so.

Pearly Queen - Traffic Traffic are a grossly underated band, and anything off their "Traffic" album is genius. Pearly queen is one of the best, with a stomping riff and great vocals to match

Hors D'Œuvres - Roy Harper Roy Harper is a brilliant songer, one of the best, and all his songs are brilliant, but this os one of my favourites. The lyrics are inspired too.

Hocus Pocus - Focus Focus were a dutch psych/prog/whatever you call it band, and most of their songs were weird and experimental, but "Hocus Pocus" has a thunderous riff, wicked drum and guitar solos, and the only time yodellings ever been cool.

Hotel California - Eagles It's another cliche, but its a great song nonetheless, andis definately NOT overated. By the way, what are colitas?

Little Red Book - Love Forever changes was their bes album by far, but this effort, from their self entitled album "Love" is one of my favourite songs by them. We've all been in that situation before, and Arthur Lee tells it perfectly.

Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones This could have been a lot of songs, but I think this is my favourite. It's just a plain and simple good song.

Sally MacLenanne - The Pogues
I love this song. It's a brilliant singalong, great for getting drunk to.

I could never pick out of the infinite ocean that is rock music, but here are a few more honourable mentions: Dont fear the reaper - Blue Oyster Cult, Paranoid - Black Sabbath, All Right Now - Free, Yesterday - The Beatles, Bad To The Bone, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, Moja Stikla - Severina, Rock Lobster - B52s, (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais - The Clash, For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield, Peace Train - Cat Stevens, Whiskey in a jar - Thin Lizzy, Peace Of Mind - Boston, Come on - Chuck Berry. I could go on forever really. I'm sorry if i've made any omissions of great artists, but i didnt want to write any more than i already have.
