vocalist- Freddie Mercury. He is the best, no doubt about it.

guitarist- Jimi Hendrix. Brian May and Jimmy Paige also should get some recognition.

bass- Cliff Burton. His talent is unmatched.

drums- Roger Taylor. I can`t beleive Taylor didn`t get more recognized. Not only did he have a great beat, but he also had heavy backround vocals live! He is the best.

Vocalist: Feddy Mercury
Guitarist: jimi hendric
Bass: Paul Mccartney

I barley seen any thing for McCaryney on bass! His bass playing tottaly changed the whole sound of the songs him and John Lennon wrote. What would penny laine be without that bass doign what it does? Good but not as good.

Songwriters: Lennon/McCartney

Also how can anyone say "bass, who cares". The bass can tottaly change the song and as a guitarist and bassit to me the bass is the most unique and open minded out of the two.

im surprised noone has mentioned anyone from soundgarden yet, and i think a lot of your opinions are foolish and idiotic, but thats your opinion, do want you want with it. lars ulrich is good, but definetly overrated. wow, on one he puts a sixtuplet double bass riff, its a cool riff but its simple. nothing to freak out about.

drums - we all know its meg white of the white stripes, admit it.

just kidding... niel peart is the best technicle drummer, he knows the art of drumming, but john bonham is better in my opinion, nobody brings more enrgy to the set as him and he was one of the first drummers to play in that style, and one of the most copied i mioght add. i dont know why matt cameron of soundgarden went unrecognized in this list, he`s amazing... the king of odd timed riffs and creativity, listen to a soundgarden song and you`ll know what i mean.

guitar - i have to say jimmy page not only because he is amazing sounding, but that he was one of the first guitarists to bring that aggressive type of playing to rock. also kim thayil of soundgarden is amazing, for all you metal slipknot freaks, look at kim thayil play 64th notes cleanly and not sound like an idiot, then make your opinion

bass - john paul jones, victor wooten, flea

vocals - definetly chris cornell, he hits notes on both ends of the audio spectrum that i never even knew existed, and well i might add, next to cornell is jimmy page, layne staley, and the guy from boston
and songwriting is cornell definetly, the mans a genious.

my favorite musicians, not necessarily rock, and i can`t pick just four or five without leaving anyone out.

vocals - peter gabriel (genesis, solo)
guitar - robert fripp (king crimson)
adam jones (tool)
omar rodriguez-lopez (the mars volta)
bass - chris squire (yes)
tony levin (king crimson, peter gabriel)
john entwistle (the who)
drums - bill bruford (yes, king crimson)
billy cobham (mahavishnu orchestra)
danny carey (tool)
keys - joe zawinul (weather report)

if you haven`t heard any of these bands or players, check them out. and yeah, i know i left out bonham, hendrix, etc...but my list would have been a million miles long. many of these musicians` contributions wouldn`t have been possible if it not for bonham, lennon, mccartney, etc.....but i did leave neil peart off because all of the drummers i listed are way more creative and have better chops (at least Cobham and Bruford for sure) than that showoff.

I`ll have to say that everyone mentioned on here so far is very talented in their own right. I was reading over the posts, however, and found that someone actually mentioned John Longstreth as best drummer. I was astonished that someone else was recognizing his awesome abilities. I don`t like the fact that this "what?!" character was criticizing a musical great like Neil, but I do agree with most of his choices.
Few of us realize that many guitar greats actually studied under Joe Satriani. Steve Vai, Eric Johnson (2nd best in my opinion), and Kirk Hammet to name a few. I read in an article that Joe Satriani was literally, in a sense, perfect. However, it said that he had no feeling behind his music. I found this to be, simply put, a very stupid statement on the author`s part. Behind every Satriani song, there is very deep emotion. Satriani is simply the best in my opinion. I respect anyone who can play an instrument, especially the guitar. However, some are just more talented than others, and Satriani is one of those musicians who stands out above the rest.

Back to my posistion on Longstreth. I am not particularly interested in the type of music that he plays, but his talent should not go unrecognized. I suggest some of you download a song by Origin. Try Lethal Manipulation. Nevermind the awful lyrics of the music, just listen and be blown away by the awesome speed of Longstreth. I have never heard anyone play as fast with double bass pedals.
