If you we trained on piano and were asked to teach an ensemble and have the choice of strings or brass at an elementary and J.H. level which one would you choose to strike out in? Maybe literally... I need to give an answer in 2 weeks. The music program has been made mandatory. So it is going to happen I have to figure out what is the best option. The kids have very little if any music background.

Do you mean you will be taking kids who are not now in any kind of music group and starting up an ensemble of some sort? If they do already have instruments, then your group will be determined by what they have, won't it? I come from a woodwind background so I tend to lean that way, but maybe a group of cornets is easier to start with. How will the school support you? Or is this a sort of research project which is more theoretical than actual? Maybe recorders are easier to start with, if you are starting from scratch on instruments. They certainly pass muster from an economic point of view.

Sorry took me so long to get back. The students have been exposed to music with recorder. The school just allocated money in the budget for instrument purchase. There are roughly 16 students of varying ages. The ensemble class is mandatory. The meeting was just postponed. To this next monday.

I'm a bit late with a reply as I didn't see this post before, but I would have said strings! If they are being played in the ensemble with the piano then strings will sound best....it'll sound beautiful!!
So how is the teaching going?
