Well, depending on how high the music goes in the treble clef, then yes, you need to move it an octave down (I don`t know what the range of a trombone is). If that note does go out of the trombone range, then you do need to go an octave lower. I play soprano saxophone in marching band, cause we have 6 tenor sax players and the conductor wouldn`t let me. There`s only me and one other girl who plays soprano.

i`ve never seen a soprano in a marching band. but i guess the bigger the band the more instrumentation. so are you new to the soprano? my band teacher is a sax person. he plays the tenor and soprano and stays away from the berry and alto. he plays one heck of a soprano in jazz but never lets any of the students play soprano. he`s always complaining on how the sopranos are always sharp, and out of tune. do you like the soprano?

Well, I`ve been playing it for about six months now. It`s not that bad. It`s a little harder than tenor cause you need a good embrochure to keep it in tune when hitting the high notes. I like it, but I have to say that the tenor is better cause it has a more jazzy sound that I like. As for them being sharp all the time, I think it depends on the saxophone and the player. The more experienced you are, the better the sound. But I guess if you have a crappy sax, it won`t sound good either way. Mine`s an EM Winston student model, it`s not bad. The finish is starting to wear off near the neck but other than that its a nice soprano. Soprano`s usually aren`t used in marching bands because there`s no part for them. So what my director said was that if we joined, we`d have to transpose the first and second clarinet parts an octave higher, so we could play them. Anyway, you play mostly brass instruments right? Are they harder to learn than sax? I was wondering, do you play trumpet? I always wanted to play it, but was too afraid that it was hard to learn.

i started on clarinet like five years ago and it was my main instrument up until i moved. my new highschool could use more clarinets but they also needed a bassist. so i switched to tuba last year. they also had a jazz band in which i joined, didn`t want a clarinet so i switched to tenor sax. the tuba was easy to learn along with the sax. if you want to learn trumpet, it`ll be easy to pick up. cause like the tuba, there are only three valves and your embrochure. seeing those cornets unable to hit those higher notes is discouraging. that kept me away from trumpet too. but since i started on the trombone, i relized that those cornets just need to practice more(thats why they are cornets) i started on the trombone when summer started which was two months ago. i also play bass guitar in my church band. do you play guitar?

Yes, I do play guitar. I just started learning it at the beginning of the summer. My grandfather is teaching me. I can play the chords, but right now I`m working on learning to play lead. I can read the tabs, I just have to work on moving my hand up and down the neck faster.

i try and avoid moving up and down the neck of my bass. to me, it is really uncomfortable. whatever note i have to hit that is too high, i just hit the lower octave version of it. nobody notices. i try and keep everything on the first four frets. although i am only playing single notes. i guess i`ll have to start learning chords sooner or later, so i`ll have to eventually become comfortable with moving up and down the neck. Hey i am going to discontinue answering this forum. thanks for all your help! email me sometimes (M.A.)

The notes written for a baritone in treble clef are written up an octave and a step compared to the baritone written in bass clef.
