Common Problems
The three most likely causes of any problems you are having with the files on our site are :

  1. You haven't got the latest copy of adobe (see Printing Music below.)
  2. You have problems with sound playback - see Playing back sound in Internet Explorer and Playing back sound in Firefox
  3. You have disabled your cookies. If you are a subscriber to the site, you will need to have cookies enabled to be able to login and access our members only files.

Printing Music

Acrobat PDF files are an industry standard for high quality printable documents from the web. They are available to 8notes members only. The Reader is a browser plug-in and is available from Adobe. To view a score in Acrobat Reader, login as a member, then simply click on the 'PDF' icon next to the piece name. If you have any problems using the Reader, please ensure you have the latest version, by following the link above.

Non-members may print the GIF images directly from the browser. Open the Gif/Midi Option next to the piece name and the Gif Image will appear in a new window. Use File > Print to print the entire screen, or right click on the image and choose 'Print Picture'. Viewers with Internet Explorer 6 can click the print icon that appears when hovering over the image.

The same method is recommended for printing the various Riffs and Lessons on the site. Here, the File > Print Option will ensure you print out all the information on the page.

Sibelius files are currently not available for printing.

Problems with sounds not playing in Internet Explorer

If you are having problems getting Internet Explorer to play the 8notes.com sound files properly, there may be a number of reasons. The following guide should help you resolve the problem.

Step 1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

Step 2. Click View.

Step 3. Select Folder Options at the bottom of the pull-down.

Step 4. Click the File Types tab.

Step 5. You'll see a list of file types. Browse the list to look for something that resembles the player your browser is currently defaulting to (the player you DO NOT want to use). This can be tricky since names of players in this window are shortened. For example, MusicMatch will read Mmjb and Media Player reads MPLAYER2 File.

Step 6. Click on the file type once. Make sure it says Extension: MP3 under File type details. This verifies the application you selected is indeed the player that is set up to be your default MP3 player.

Step 7. Now that you've found the right file type, click Edit.

Step 8. Click Browse to find the file name of the new player you want to default to, making sure it ends with .exe. Then add "%1" at the end, and click OK.

Step 9. Quit and restart Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer.

If the above doesn't work, try the following:

Step 1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

Step 2. Click View.

Step 3. Select Folder Options at the bottom of the pull-down.

Step 4. Click the File Types tab.

Step 5. Click the New Type button and fill in the following:
Description of type: MP3 file
Associated extension: .mp3
Content Type (MIME): audio/mpeg

Step 6. Under Actions, click the New button.

Step 7. In the New Action box, type "open" in the Action window.

Step 8. Click Browse to find the file name of the new player you want to default to, making sure it ends with .exe. Then add "%1" at the end, and click OK.

Step 9. Quit and restart Internet Explorer.

Still having problems ?

Step 1. Open Internet Explorer this time

Step 2. Click Tools and select Internet Options

Step 3. On the Advanced Tab scroll down till you see the Multimedia section, and make sure the 'Play Sounds in Web Pages' box is checked.

Still having problems with your default settings?

Make sure you closed and reopened your browser.

Make sure your computer isn't muted - double click the speaker icon in the bottom corner of the screen and ensure the mute button is not checked.

Problems with sounds not playing in Firefox

How do I configure my browser if I'm using Firefox?

Step 1. Click Tools on the Firefox toolbar and select Options.

Step 2. Select the Applications tab

Step 3. You'll see a list of file types. Browse to the file types you are having problems with - midi and/or mp3.

Step 4. Select the name of the media player you want to use to open the files.

Step 5. Quit and restart Firefox.

Scorch Files

If you can't see the music on our 'Scorch' pages, you probably need the free Scorch plug-in from Sibelius. It is totally free and takes only a few seconds to download from here.

It is an impressive piece of technology, which allows you to follow the music as it plays, stop and start the music from any point, and best of all transpose the entire score instantly. This is great if you want to try out a piece in a different register. The one drawback of the Sibelius files on 8notes.com are that they are not printable. If you want to print out different transpositions of pieces on the site you'll need to put in a request from the score info page - that's one of the benefits of subscribing.

Transposition & Parts Requests

Subscribers can request new parts, transpositions and even new versions (for different instruments) of many of the pieces on the site. This is not available for all pieces - in some cases the piece we host is a public domain score and we do not have the original copy to edit or adapt. In other cases we only offer the chord progression or riff lesson and so cannot offer a full score to transpose or make parts from. In all other cases we will do our best to fulfill your request. Most parts and transposition requests will be made within 48 hours, but due to time constraints it is not always possible to fulfill every request, particularly concerning new versions/arrangements of pieces which can be very time consuming. If you put in a request and have not heard anything do feel free to contact us again to check the situation.
