Kerry Willingham, Oboist and Reedmaker

I grew up in South Texas and first studied with Bill Benjamin and Elizabeth Camus, both principal oboists with the San Antonio Symphony in the early 1970's. Attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and was a student of Jerry Sirucek receiving a Bachelors degree in Oboe performance. Attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX in 1977-1980, receiving a M.M degree in church music ministries. At that time, I studied with Noah Knepper in woodwind pedagogy. In 1980 I accepted a position as instructor of music at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, MO and worked on a Ph. D. at Washington University in Historical Performance Practice, studying baroque oboe with Nora Post and baroque flute with Nicholas McGegan and performance practice master classes with Wieland Keujken. In 1984, I won the position as principal oboist with the United States Army Field Band of Washington D. C. where there were many opportunities for solo and ensemble performance as a free lance musician in the Washington D.C. area. I performed with "Prevailing Winds" woodwind quintet making a debut in Kennedy Center in the Washington Performing Arts series. and was active in chamber music and with wife Donna, a violinist formed the Annapolis Baroque Ensemble which performs in many historic houses in the Annapolis, MD area.

Hi Abigail,
Your reed is TOO Hard.. it is NOT your fault. Perhaps they got your order incorrect, but the only thing to do with that reed is to have a teacher work on it. Or also it might just be cracked.. or just badly made. I do have some nice reeds that WILL work for you.. AND they are Guaranteed. Check my site out at www.reedmaker.com

Thanks
Kerry

Hi I have been ordering some handmade reeds from a place in New York and they have been pretty great in the past. But lately the ones I have been receiving are different. I have no clue why, but I have to blow REALLY hard to make a good sound and that just gives me a really bad headache! Also they sound very airy and dry up in the upper range (about from high A to F above the staff). In the past they had been easy to play and sounded great! I have tried soaking them for different amounts of time but it doesn't really make a difference. Even if I soak them in water for a long time they still sound dry and airy. I don't really know that much about reeds because I live about 2 hours from the nearest town with an oboe teacher! I'm really confused and can't really figure out what to do and I don't know if I might be doing something wrong. If you could help that would be good!
