I can't believe I posted on my own wall!! LOL I am so fantastic. I am reauditioning because I dropped it, so now I am put up against the new freshmen auditioners for next year. It isn'tthat once I am taken I am taken for good. It's based on the people that audition for that entry semester. Muczynski is only my FAVORITE composer. The Time Pieces are outrageous!! I love playing them. I don't think it would be good for my audition. They don't want anything too difficult, and as difficult as Spohr is in the third mvt. Muczynski is WAY harder. I group Spohr with Weber and Mozart...he's a hybrid. Muczynski is in a class all by himself! I play lots of flute music by him. If you know a good flute player...you guys should play the Duos for flute and clarinet by him. They were also written for two flutes, but I like the two different timbres of instruments.

Well, anything that I learned that pertained to theory (i.e. rhythm, note values...the basics) was taught to me by whatever band instructor I had at the time. I was fortunate that my middle school band director played clarinet. We didn't ever get lessons, but we got little tips and tricks here and there from him. He was very strict, though. If he caught you ever playing another instrument he would take you in his office and scold you. He didn't want the students just messing around on other instruments...especially if they belonged to someone else even if they gave you permission. Probably to make sure nothing happened the instruments.

Well, I got fingering charts and learned the fingerings proficiently. That meant that I could play the chromatic scale 3 octaves on the clarinet (that's what I started on) in one breath. This was before I could circular breathe so it was a huge accomplishment. I listened to lots of recordings, and was trying to make my tone like theirs. I felt that the more I sounded like them, the better I would sound overall. It had nothing to do with theory, and everything to do with sound. I recorded myself over and over and compared the recordings and focused on what I wanted to make better. Then I would use trial and error to see what I had to do to make it better. That's pretty much my process. I wouldn't say that I know a LOT about either the clarinet or flute, but I have been around them quite a few years (18 and 10 respectively). Unfortunately...most people that have played flute for 10 years are much much better than I am. I am really nothing special. Thanks!

I copied styles from recordings. It felt natural to play like they did. Maybe I will be the next Milli Vanilli...if you even know who they were!

I had not had any teachers before college. My parents couldn't afford them when I was in school, and I couldn't afford them once I moved out. I just practiced things myself. Sorry to hear about your bad teacher. I hope you find a better one!

Better intonation is achieved many different ways. My preferred way is to sing while I play. Just make sure your throat is open. Try keeping a little air in your cheeks. More on the high notes...less on the low notes. Hope that helps!

Happy New Year to you also. The only difference between one and two instrument majors here is the fact that the second instrument still requires lessons, and you have to be in that studio and do the things they require of you also. The Flute Studio is freaking ridiculous! We are required to do so many extra things that we have 3 "classes" we take for no credit. That, on top of the clarinet requirements would have been utter hell.

Yeah I got into college. They loved my audition. Spohr 1 would definitely be a challenging sight-read. I got into college on both flute and clarinet. Unfortunately, I gave up the clarinet major because it was an insane amount of work to do a double instrument major.

I have played all of those, but truthfully, they are really really difficult to get the true sense of the piece out of so early in your playing. Nielsen's Concerto was my audition piece for college. Well, one of them, but they stopped my audition after I played the Nielsen. My other choice was Copland's Concerto. Anyway...high B is just like high C only add LH 2 and RH 2 (middle fingers of both hands). Feel free tomessage or email with more questions!

Spohr's Concerto no 1 is my FAVORITE!! You really should become fluent in your 4th octave chromatically. There are lots of fingering sites online. That C4 is played (well, how I play it) with the register key, LH Ab Side Key (for throat Ab), LH1 and RH1. If you want more practice at high notes and difficult phrases I highly recommend the book: Sixteen Modern Etudes for Clarinet by Frantisek Zitek. #3 has a run up to High C. They are crazy etudes that work on finger dexterity. I have used a few of these for auditions. They are definitely more advanced than Rose Etudes are.
