Piccolo sounds really nice, and a lot of fun
My school doesn't have a marching band sadly. Basically I can only take band up till grade 12 (or in a few grades I could join the "orchestra" but the orchestra is basically 30 violins, 1 cello and a handful of woodwind and brass players. ) The stupid thing is, freshman can join the orchestra with violin/viola/cello/double bass, but woodwinds and brass have to wait until they are junior (or perhaps a year before) to join the orchestra. Personally I'd rather be in the highest level band then orchestra, since our orchestra sucks.
High school bands up here lack expectations. They all basically SUCK! Luckily we have lots of local community bands and youth orchestras that offer higher level musical material to play.
But hey, band for me is an easy A xD. Plus my band director knows I like music a lot.

Oh and I was sort of running out of characters. The reason I'm going to be buying a professional clarinet, is I'm probably going to do my grade 6 clarinet exam next june =D. I've really improved while playing with a summer orchestra this summer, but band with bass clarinet is just way too easy, thats why Im switching to clarinet, and hopefully improving more! Yay run-on sentences xD.

Well my clarinet teacher wants me to buy a Buffet R13, which is about $3,500, although I recently emailed her about these other clarinets made from hard rubber that I saw on these forums (I think john suggested it in one of my topics) http://www.ridenourclarinetproducts.com/clarinets.htm
Quite nice clarinets, although I'd for sure have to test one first, but its like an online order thing only, so I'm hopping my clarinet teacher knows someone that has one so I cant try and play it. Plus the price is sooo cheap! I'd be able to buy a B flat and an A clarinet right away, or even possibly a basset clarinet in A =). Ill save a bass clarinet untill a latter purchase xD Perhaps I should take a picture of my lovely rental yamaha clarinet? xD.
Too bad I'm not all that good at clarinet yet, been taking lessons for about 3 months and have played bass clarinet in band for 2 years. Switching to clarinet for band this year and bass for pit orchestra =)

Good luck getting a new flute! =] I'm getting a new clarinet probably by next june (yay no more student model rental xD!) perhaps Ill ask my parents as a xmas present to put some money towards the clarinet too xD. And in a couple of years I need to buy an A clarinet for solos and stuff =)

does your school have a marching band, becuase if it does, i would reccomend not overpracticing marching music, because when you play it for all of fall, you will REALLY start to hate it, I did that my freashman year, and my oh my, I learned my lesson the hard way!

Wait.. my private teacher or band? Yeah, I know. I thought auditions were gonna be like terrible, but they really weren't. I was told that this one judge would try to make me cry, and be little me as much as possible. It turned out he was really nice.
About the festival.. where do they usually take place? I wonder if Debussy's Arabesque No. 2 (which is also for flute) would be on there.. or the Cimarosa Oboe Concerto.

i personally don't like tenor that much either, but it gives me a chance to learn a new instrument, and do something in homeroom at 7 in the mornin lol! it's really nothng great, but you probably know that. the one thing i don' like about it is the sound, it's not as sweet as an altos.
ooh fun. more tight, harder to control embouchures (sp?)! but i just want to try it, i'm not sure if i'll pursue it.

Yeah, I've played Bb clarinet before. it was actually the instrument I started on in 4th grade. I still play my sister's rental today, and I play fine. So, I know all the basics, trills, ranges, etc. I could start Eb clarinet, and hopefully have no problem. I also play 1st chair tenor sax in my school's stage band

I know most of the flute/picc fingerings, usual trills, all up to 3rd octave G (4 ledger lines above the staff).. but nothing about impractical trills, tremolos, and everything else you mentioned. i learned piccolo in about 2 months, i would have liked to progress further on it, but my director wouldn't let me do anything with it. so right now i'm hoping to pick up my school's Eb clar. and somewhere in the future try an oboe d'amore

I love key changes too, and I love the harder ones.. i.e. Db, E major, etc.! Everyone thinks they're so hard, but really they aren't? My oboe concerto is not coming along well lol :\ I've been having writers block lately, and I really want to get a full orchestra piece off the ground and started, so that I can give it to my orchestra director for the alumni year (this year)! I want to use expanded instrumentation, i.e. picc, e. horn, eb clar, contra bsn (maybe?). If you want, when I [hopefully] finish it I can send you the Fl. 1 and Picc. part to you, and get someone's opinion!

I'm sure band, solo, and orchestra use the same grading system here too. I'm trying to write a concerto, and something for full orchestra. I just finished a miniature (1 mvt.) for oboe, and I'm gonna put that in my scores when I can get the 3 pages (lol ) in one pdf file, but i odn't know how to do that. what version of Finale PrintMusic do you have, and do you like it? aside from the fact how watered down it is from Finale. I have FinalePrintMusic2006, but I want Finale2008.

I'm not sure about Solo grading system.. it could be 1-6 (six being the hardest).. band and orchestra are like that I know for a fact. In one publisher they have a Grade 7 for band, but I'm honestly not sure.

I've seen grade three music that goes that high for Flute.. lol ! I can get up that high on my oboe when I fool around with the tuner and fingerings.. but usually my limit is to 3rd octave g.. not usually a pleasant sound, but I know I can get up there . you should see some of the symphony flute parts.. i don't think i've seen flutes go so high so many times in a symphony work! haha you should see Rodeo!

Haha, in "jazz band" (it wasn't technically a jazz band because we literally had a full concert band; it just played jazz styled music)well, we play a song called The Good Time Chromatic Blues.. talk about playing the F Major scales 30 times in one song!

that's good i hate sitting in band, knowing the music (i could play the music in my sleep), and wishing I could be down at the HS playing in the symphonic band; with music hopefully challenging enough to make me work on it.
but anyway, i heard that concertino you were talking about before on iTunes. it sounds like it could be a challenge. i've been workign on Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Zhou Tian's The Palace of Nine Perfections, Copland's Hoe-down from Rodeo, and soon Copland's Appalachian Spring. In oboe music.. Bendetto Marcello's Oboe Concerto in C Minor.

Well.. in my highschool there's 9th grade band, and then in 10th grade you can audition for symphonic band, and if you don't make it you go to the "B" band or the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade band. I want the symphonic band director to hear me play so i can skip ninth grade band. I know that middle school band is WAY diffeerent from highschool/symphonic band. I'm just hoping it's better.

You're lucky your band director makes your life really involved with band. At my school, band is just a class it's not something really big. Plus, most of the kids that are in it hate it. I'm the only one who takes it seriously.. if only the music could be challenging :\.
About piccolo, my friend in another orhestra I was apart of had to play it in Stars and Stripes Forever, and I sat right next to her! Talk about bleeding ears! Good thing English horn doesn't play very loud! lol

If you like flute the best, then don't let anyone stop you from playing it, or auditioning on it. I would much rather play English horn in TRYPO, but English horn isn't used in some of the music and that would limit my participation in the orchestra. So i have to stick with oboe for now.

Haha, oboe is not that hard, just requires some patience and practice. The fingering isn't difficult..
You should try it one day, it is quite a lovely instrument to play.

Hi Thanks for your question about mp3s - it's not just about the composer being dead, the piece must also be out of copyright, which usually means it was written before 1923, and it must also be either played by you or be something you have full permission from the performers involved to use. There's a lot of great stuff we'd love to allow on, but we can't risk getting sued!

Yeah, I did read The Supernaturalist. It was good, but I like the Artemis Fowl series better. I bumped into the 5th Artemis Fowl (the lost colony) last month, unknowing that there was one. I think the 5th is best yet. What about you? Which one did you like most? It seems there are also plans for an Artemis Fowl movie. I hope I'll will also come to the theaters in Belgium. Yeah, i just started transposing it last night, it will have 4 sharps. The first note is F#, so never mind! Ill just write it as high as any sane person can play! (i can only get a high A out, and thats if im having a REALLY, REALLY good day)!
