My youth orchestra starts next week. Last year we played Danse Bacchanale, and the 1st oboist was playing e.h. so I got the cadenza at the beginning. We also played the last movement of New world symphony, and that was really fun too.

oboegirl
Thanks! I have been practicing the music and I really like everything we are playing. My favorite is Capriccio Espagnol. I really like the english horn part in the 2nd movement. Are you playing anything fun in youth symphony?
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
Cool! The english horn is such a fun instrument to play! I actually think fox instruments are pretty nice. Some people say they aren't great, but I think the one I have is pretty good at least. Yesterday I found out I made 1st chair oboe for youth symphony, and I also made for english horn! I really am looking forward to playing e.h. because I really never have had that much of an opportunity to play it anywhere!

That's one of the reasons I switched to Oboe. I have had more of a chance to be noticed. I'd pretty much have to be stupendous on the flute in order to really stick out from my peer flautists.

I have yet to perform in a Chamber ensemble but I would really love to.
And I've tried to get people so we could make a woodwind quintet but it's tuff getting the bassoonist in my year to play xD.

How long have you been playing flute? On which instrument would you consider yourself to be a stronger player?

Delete | 15 years ago

OboeLover4Life
O how nice. Concert Band is a lot of fun but there's nothing like playing in an orchestra. The music is simply sublime xD.
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
lol I should try that. Too bad I only have one saxophone neck strap. Maybe I can find another one somewhere..
Delete | 15 years ago

OboeLover4Life
lol I can't wait to start making reeds!

I might start playing the Marcello for a competition (if I remember to mention it to my teacher >.>. The pieces I'm working on atm r the Mozart Oboe Quartet (hopefully for my school's December concert) and the Charles Colin 3rd Solo de Concert (College Recital I might be playing in).
I'm also going to work on the Saint Saens Sonata later in the year for my All-State Audition again (I hope I can get another 100 >.< and my teacher told me we would work on the Haydn Concerto though I think that's just for fun xD.

Crap.............I better start practicing again. I took a day off yesterday but now I don't think I can afford it lol.
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
That's a good idea! I probably have to find a new neckstrap soon because the one I am using is breaking so I have to tape it together in order to use it lol.
Delete | 15 years ago

OboeLover4Life
No I haven't but I can imagine how much work it must take to make Oboe reeds lol. Right now I'm still refining my playing, though I'll probably start making them later in the school year with my teacher.

Btw are there any pieces you working on? What are your plans for the future?

And did I mention it was very nice to meet you?

O np. I've been playing Oboe for what will be two years by late October. If you wanna hear what I sound like you can listen to my School recital. I performed the Concertino in C by C.M. Von Weber on May 1st (exactly one week from my b-day ^-^).

Umm.....I tried English Horn while I was in All-City but the odds were against. They had two horns, 2 bocals and 1 reed. All crap lol. I liked it but I wanna try it again with a good horn, bocal and reed the next time around.

No I do not play on a Loree. I play on a Fox Renard Model, plastic resin. It's a good horn and I've been using it since I started xD.
It's actually the school's though so for a while now my Teacher has been looking for an Oboe of my own. I love the Oboe so much I want it to be my main instrument when I major in music for College :D.
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
Hmm, that might be too short, but I don't know. My neck strap is about 24 inches. Do you have the e.h. that you can try it on yet?
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
Hi,
Actually, I don't know what brand of neck strap I use. I found it in our school's bassoon case, but it doesn't have any markings or anything. I have seen neck straps that you can buy that are specifically for english horn, but you should try the one you have before you buy one. The english horn isn't too hard to play, but the half-hole is kind of weird and takes getting used to! It also takes more air to play.
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
Not yet, but I will play it in a youth orchestra next year. I am really looking forward to it.
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
It would be nice if my school had an english horn! I think my Fox e.h. is ok, but I would really like to play on a Loree english horn one day. I bet marigaux english horns are really good too.
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
That's good! I am currently using my old 441 to play in a pit orchestra because I'm still in the process of breaking in my new instrument. It sounds ok, but isn't as good as the loree!
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
No I didn't get a chance to, but I wish I did! I've heard that they make great instruments!
Delete | 15 years ago

oboegirl
Thanks! It is by Telemann and I got it from the book "Solos for the English horn player." So it wasn't originally written for English horn, but I still think it sounds cool.
Delete | 15 years ago

JazzOboe
Yes, and that's because the oboe is in the same key and plays the same notes as the flute.

I did a duet in competition with my friend who plays the flute. It went pretty well, except that she plays very softly, and it was hard to match her level without dropping my pitch, so I overpowered her slightly.
Delete | 16 years ago

JazzOboe
Yes, exactly!

And even more than not having any competition, and the music being beyond boring, there's still the fact that the oboe is simply an orchestral instrument, and was not meant to play in a band.

The oboe does not sound good with the saxaphone and the tuba. That's just how it works. You can't stick an oboe in a band and expect the band to sound good unless the oboist "blends in." And the only way to do that is to hardly play at all!

There is the possibitity of playing orchestral music in your band, but most or all of that music is beyond the playing ability of a middle school group.

bp_oboist
haha, i wouldn't know, i cna't do it yet. so i'll have to see, it's better to let it come naturally instead of forcing it and hurtin myself lol.
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
Haha, thanks ! I can't do diapraghm (sp?) vibrato.. I like hurt myself in the process of attempting to do it. My teacher told me it was like laughing, but she also said not to worry about it. So for now, I'm just using throat vibrato.
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
Haha, yeah, I've been trying to use the diaphragm (sp?) type vibrato but I think I've been putting to much energy into trying to get that vibrato out.

Thanks ! I've been playing oboe for 5/6 years now, and English horn for 2
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
haha, yeah it's intense sometimes but i really get a lot done. i use vibrato from my throat; my natural vibrato has yet to settle in.
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
I hope what I told you helped, and that it wasn't too vague.
Delete | 16 years ago

DanTheMaster
Yeah, that's it, a chesterfield! Americans and Canadians do speak almost alike, except there are accents for both countries. Oh, and then there's the Qubecois. Actually, I didn't even know this guy was Canadian until he told me.
Delete | 16 years ago

DanTheMaster
A person that I know from Canada said that where he came from (around Calgary) they called a couch (or sofa) a "Chesterford Field" or "Chesterford Square" or something that sounds sort of like that...ever heard of Canadian lingo like that, or was he pulling my leg?
Delete | 16 years ago

oboegirl
Thanks for the friend request!
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
There's nothing really that I can say.. I've really pushed myself to extremes for the last two years (and i'm talking 5+ hours of practicing.. ). I've listened to a lot of older, more experienced oboists play, and I've been emulating how they sound; that helps a lot.
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
aha, that's awesome ! i LOVE the cimarosa and scheherazade.

Hi Canadian, I am doing well. I woke up way to energized today, and have too much tme for my online course at school, so I just surf 8notes, lol. How are you doing? I really want a new bassoon!
Delete | 16 years ago

oboegirl
LoL yes it is!
Delete | 16 years ago

oboegirl
I know! All the "Special" oboes are soooo expensive too!
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
yeah it is very hard to get your hands on a 'special' oboe. it's even hard to get an English horn!
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
yeah, i love my oboe right now. haha, it's liek raymond said, i love/play my instrument to my own insanity. i really would like to try oboe d'amore.
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
I WISH I owned my own English horn; unfortunately, it's TRYPO's. It's a Renard 555 Intermediate level, but it's very nice. Yeah, that was recorded over 2 weeks ago, and I had had the instrument for 2 days, so I was recollecting the feel of not playing the EH for over 3 months. It's very refreshing to play two instruments in an orchestra. I love all the solo oppurtunities I get on oboe and EH.
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
it should work now.. i disembedded it by accident!
Delete | 16 years ago

bp_oboist
haha thanks! i like your pic too.. even though i think you've had it for awhile now.

btw! i'm posting a vid of me playing the english horn on my profile!

Haha, good as always...not really. Still having band trouble, especially with this new band director. Extremely rude! Read my newest post on the forums and you'll see what im talking about. Auuuuuugh! Band has to much drama, why can't people just get along? Thay make a big deal out everything too. Wait...this is suppose to be a comment not a message...in that case. Life is great and Im having a blast! (Im staying positive!!! =^-^=)

Delete | 16 years ago

tenorsax13

Hey. I just met a Canadian trumpet player down here in America. Kinda random, but I just thought I'd post it.
Delete | 16 years ago

tenorsax13
Well, thats different!
Actually, I smell the school cellos all the time! They smell very good actually. lol

Cello is difficult to sound well on, and the positions get complicated. But I love to play it.
Delete | 16 years ago

tenorsax13
thanks a lot. but flute really isnt as easy as it looks. and cello is VERY difficult. and SMELLS easy??? you've been sniffing flutes??
Delete | 16 years ago

tenorsax13
My cousin plays, and I tried it, and was not very good.
The fingerings are similar to the flute(I stole his fingering chart). lol Well, from what i heard it kills the flute embouchure so for now i enjoy listening to it.

An oboe solo, you say? Hmm...

Well, feel free to adapt either of my flute pieces and use those - let me know if you have trouble with that and need a hand.

You never know though - I have quite a lot of free time this summer, so I might get inspired and come up with something!

Hi, thanks for all the comments.

How is the oboe I am currently playing in a trio and would highly recommend small ensembles as a means for having fun and improving.

I think the oboe forum is dying, which is a shame. I'm annoyed because I can't post on any of my old random threads - maybe they are too old.

Cya round.
